  • "Dried herb, forest, berry and black peppery cola combine on the nose and palate to delirious effect, making way for a velvety texture of medium-sized body and weight. Sourced from several vineyards, including some estate, this wine satisfies on every level."

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton macro bins. It was then hand sorted and gently destemmed into our 1 ton Super Tfermenters. The skins of the fruit are punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction with minimal harsh tannin from the seeds. When primary fermentation was complete the wine was pressed from the skins into barrel. French oak from a number of different cooperages, including 25% new oak barrels, 40% one-year-old French oak barrels, and the remaining neutral barrels, were used. The final blend was assembled prior to bottling which occurred August 8th, 2014. The wine was bottled using screw cap closures, to ensure highest quality.

Vintage

The 2013 vintage had ideal temperatures and growing conditions. The flavors were able to develop and show expressively. The vineyards were farmed meticulously in order to keep the vigorous canopy that develops in the famed-Goldridge Soil- balanced with the crop load on the vines. When done correctly the pure fruit and clarity of Russian River Valley vineyards shines through, as displayed in this wine. The fruit was hand-harvested on four different days: August 27 at 26.2 Brix, August 30 at 25.3 Brix, September 3 at 25.9 Brix, and September 19 at 24.9 Brix. The four distinct harvest dates indicate the individual nature of each site and what each lends to the complexity of this wine.

Vineyard

This wine is inspired by our exploration into the more western reaches of the Sonoma coast appellation. It exemplifies the fruit-driven Pinot Noir and concentrated rich flavors that one sees in this region. We work with a number of different vineyards in the Russian RiverValley including our own. Thale’s Vineyard and a neighboring place on Westside Rd called FlaxVineyard. Also, included are Tina Marie and Dutton’s Widdoes Ranch, both in the heart of Green Valley.

"Delicious, compelling; a compelling wine of its region; a delicious, finessed expression of place. “A delicate richness pervades this floral pinot, its strawberry-blossom scents and transparent strawberry flavors rounded by oak. An earthy, celery-root bitterness lasts with the fruit, inciting an appetite for halibut braised with shiitake mushrooms.”

  • Excellent; highly recommended “This full-bodied wine offers fresh strawberry aromas, nicely concentrated and ripe black-cherry flavors and a good, slightly tannic texture that keeps coming back for more. Good balance and a nice vibrance help it stand out.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels — 22% new and 22% one-year-old — which enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on July 26, 2019.

Vintage

The 2018 growing season began with warm winter weather before things turned cool and rainy in February, which prevented an early bud break. While the rains continued, things warmed up again in March, providing ideal nutrients and growing conditions for the vines. From June onwards the weather was lovely and temperate, with sunny days and cool nights ensuring excellent flavor development and acid retention in the grapes. As harvest drew near, the weather turned warm providing a final push to ripeness. Day Ranch Vineyard is planted to Clone 667, and we harvested our fruit on September 24th, 2018.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.

“This is MacRostie’s first pinot noir from outside of Sonoma County, sourced from a vineyard in Philo where the vines grow on an alluvial terrace 15 miles from the coast. That coastal influence is in the cranberry and brambly blackberry freshness of the fruit, with high-toned florals and deeper umami notes of cloud-ear mushrooms. Oak adds to the wine’s tannic weight, but those tannins are yielding and will merge into the fruit complexity with bottle age.”

The wine was bottled on October 31st, 2017.

Vintage

Slightly warmer than average, the 2016 growing season proved to be a very good one, with conditions nearly perfect for growing Pinot Noir. A well-timed cool spell in August slowed ripening down, enabling the fruit to develop evenly to full maturity without sugars being too high. Day Ranch Vineyard is planted to clone 667, and we harvested our fruit on September 8th, 2016.

Exploring yet another area in Coastal Northern California, we ventured a bit north to just outside of Sonoma County in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. From its deep, inky purple color to its gorgeous aromas of black cherry, sweet tobacco leaf, plum, and baking spices, this is a dazzling Carneros PinotNoir. On the palate, it is lush and supple, with velvety tannins underscoring vibrant flavors of blackberry, spice, and subtle French oak, all of which carry through to a bright, soft, and long-lasting finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. The wine was put into French oak barrels, with 30% new oak. After 10 months of aging, the wine was bottled on August 9th, 2016.

Vintage

The 2015 vintage got off to an early start and delivered fairly warm weather throughout the growing season. While overall yields were extremely low, the quality was exceptional, with the grapes showing amazing concentration. With no threat of rain in sight, we hand harvested the grapes exactly when we wanted to in the cool evening hours of September 2nd, 2015.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Glass House Vineyard, which is named for the striking modern home tucked in the middle of the vineyard. GlassHouse is located on the western edge of Carneros, where it is strongly influenced by the onshore winds that channel through the Petaluma Gap. It also features volcanic soils that contribute to the dense color and demeanor of this wine.

This wine has a high density, opulent red-blue hue, with alluring aromas of spice, earth, and a touch of floral potpourri. About 30% whole clusters were included, and as a result, the spice notes extend to the rich and creamy palate, where pronounced, yet elegantly integrated, tannins underscore the fruit and add complexity to this age-worthy wine.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 25% were new and 38% once filled. This enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on August 9th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10 to 30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The block we source fruit from is block 2.11 and features Clone 667, which was harvested on September 20th, 2022.

“It might not be a stretch to surmise that the relatively new Petaluma Gap AVA became one largely due to the fruit that has come from the Gap’s Crown Vineyard. It does particularly well in the hands of MacRostie winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen in the 2021 vintage, with this combination of deep cherry and raspberry fruit, dry earth minerality and fall spice, balanced with ‘house style’ acidity and finishing long and toasty. Beautiful!”

The red fruit and dried flower notes are echoed on the entry, where lovely tension frames the mouth-watering fruit flavors. Elegantly poised and pronounced, this fascinating wine will leave you intrigued and wanting a couple of bottles for your cellar to see what wonders aging brings.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed off skins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 22% were new oak and 55% one-year-old. We bottled the wine on July 31st, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. The grapes for this wine came from two prized blocks of Fiddlestix Vineyard, one on the floor of the vineyard and one on its rocky hillside. Both were harvested on September 14th, 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Fiddlestix Vineyard. Located at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in the acclaimed Sta. Rita Hills AVA, Fiddlestix Vineyard was planted in 1998 by famed Pinot Noir winemaker Kathy Joseph. It is designed with a unique east-west orientation that draws in ocean breezes and fog from the Pacific, with the fog often hanging over vines until mid-morning, and temperatures rarely exceeding 80 F. This, combined with well-drained soils, creates an intense wine with well-structured tannins.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Our part of Hellenthal Vineyard, the prized House Block, is planted to a field blend of Calera selection and Pommard Clone grapes. The fruit from this vineyard was harvested by hand on September 18, 2021.

Vineyard

Hellenthal Vineyard is owned by Gard Hellenthal, one of the pioneers in the Fort Ross-Seaview Appellation. The vineyard is now managed by his daughter, Elisa Hellenthal. Located just miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard reaches towering elevations of more than 1,000 feet above sea level. At this high elevation, the vines sit above the fog layer giving them the warmth to fully ripen and develop ideal flavors. At the same time, the cool maritime breezes balance the heat from the sun to keep the climate perfect for the finicky Pinot Noir grapes.
