About this Wine

Hellenthal Vineyard is always one of our most vintage-specific wines, with a style that can be quite different year to year. On the palate, this wine is all about nuance. The tannins are fine and the flavors of cherry, pomegranate, and clove spice flirt with the tongue leaving a lasting impression and a feeling of wanting more.

Hellenthal Vineyard is always one of our most vintage-specific wines. The style can be extremely different one vintage to another. In 2021, the wine has low color density and a bright red hue. A delicate melange of raspberry, strawberry, red licorice, and spice aromas immediately capture your attention. On the palate, this wine is all about nuance. The tannins are fine and the flavors of cherry, pomegranate, and clove spice flirt with the tongue leaving a lasting impression and a feeling of wanting more.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was barrel aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new, with 17% one-year-old. The wine was bottled on July 28, 2022

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Our part of Hellenthal Vineyard, the prized House Block, is planted to a field blend of Calera selection and Pommard Clone grapes. The fruit from this vineyard was harvested by hand on September 18, 2021.

Vineyard

Hellenthal Vineyard is owned by Gard Hellenthal, one of the pioneers in the Fort Ross-Seaview Appellation. The vineyard is now managed by his daughter, Elisa Hellenthal. Located just miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard reaches towering elevations of more than 1,000 feet above sea level. At this high elevation, the vines sit above the fog layer giving them the warmth to fully ripen and develop ideal flavors. At the same time, the cool maritime breezes balance the heat from the sun to keep the climate perfect for the finicky Pinot Noir grapes.
