Our thrill of discovery continues as we begin a new chapter – Clockwise. Our inaugural Sauvignon Blanc release is made from three unique Russian River Valley vineyards. With a limited production of 340 cases, it is only available online, or at the MacRostie Estate House.
This wine is the palest green yellow color with crystal clarity. The nose is full of tropical fruit aromas such as melon and kiwi. The palate is crisp and clean with lime citrus backbone. The small use of oak gives the wine a richness and finish that make the wine balanced and inviting.
This vintage produced 340 (750 ml) cases
2015 marks the first vintage of MacRostie Winery Sauvignon Blanc production. Three vineyards were selected for their unique microclimates that lend to pronounced wine styles all sought after in world-class Sauvignon Blanc wines. Salzgeber located on Westside Rd has earthy and grassy aromatics. Merriam, a warmer site in south Healdsburg brought rich mouth feel and tropical notes. The third component, Mirabelle Vineyard, is the coolest site which has traits of lean acidity and citrus style.
The 2015 vintage was early from bud break to harvest. After three years of drought and warm temperatures vineyard growth was accelerated. Contributing to this early harvest was also a very small set, or yield. With low volumes of fruit and generous canopy the grapes matured quickly. Each vineyard was picked on a different day based on the flavors and development of each. Merriam, Salzgeber, Mirabelle were picked on the respective days; September 3rd, 2015 at 24.2 brix, September 4th, 2015 at 24.3 brix, and September 11th, 2015 at 23.1 brix.
The grapes harvested went directly to press as whole clusters in order to maximize quality and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouth feel texture. To capture the unique styles of each vineyard a few different approaches to fermentation and aging were used. About 72% of the juice was fermented in stainless steel and 28% fermented in 4th use French oak barrels. Our stainless steel tanks have temperature control which helps captures aromatics and maintain a crisp style. The use of oak gives the wine rich round mouth feel and texture. Aging of the wine lasted 4months and was 35% barrel age in 4th use French Oak and 65% stainless steel. This combination continues to accentuate the blend of tropical and rich, grassy and earthy, citrus and fruity Sauvignon Blanc wine styles. Bottling occurred February 20th, 2016.
