“Bright, poignant red with bright cherry, sweet basil, and rose petals. Nutmeg and cinnamon lend spice to the perfume and the palate, with a hint of red pepper that piquantly seasons the juicy finish.”

Tasting Notes

This wine has a high-density, opulent red-blue hue, with alluring aromas of black cherry and dark plum. A perfumed quality, both from the fruit and the new French oak barrels, melds luxuriously with the dark fruit profile. This wine has a full mid-palate and a weighty balance, with notions of cocoa and oak adding nuance and complexity to a long, luxurious finish.

  • “Bright, poignant red with bright cherry, sweet basil, and rose petals. Nutmeg and cinnamon lend spice to the perfume and the palate, with a hint of red pepper that piquantly seasons the juicy finish.”

  • 92 Points: Tonya Pitts Wine Enthusiast Advance Buying Guide - April 2024
  • “Charming, fresh and well balanced, this wine exudes crushed raspberries and cherries in the aroma, then candied cherries, red apples and cinnamon on the palate. Light in body and low in tannins, it has a texture that is smooth and easy.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels—33% new and the remaining neutral—which enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled July 28th, 2022.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Day Ranch Vineyard is planted to many different clones. The block we source fruit from is block 2.11, and features Clone 667, which was harvested on September 15th, 2021.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.
