Tasting Notes

This is a beautifully elegant and dry rosé, with lifted tangerine and watermelon aromas, as well as a fun aroma that brings to mind youthful memories of bubble gum. On the palate, bright, crisp acidity is balanced by richer layers of ripened apricot and cantaloupe, resulting in a wine that is refreshingly smooth and ideal for enjoying during fun, al fresco gatherings.

Winemaking

Rosé is a fun, yet challenging, wine to make. Achieving the right color is all about timing and vineyard choice. Color is the first lure of this wine, and it is crucial to have it just right. To give the wine fruit aromatics, a round mid-palate, fresh acidity, and a poignant finish, many vinification methods were used during winemaking. 45% of the fruit went directly to press, which produces a light and delicate pink color while bringing a bit more structure and mouthfeel to the wine. The other 55% was produced using the saignée method, which produces an aromatic, fruit-forward wine. A range of 2-to-48 hours of skin contact was used to vary the amount of color in each lot. Using both the direct-to-press and saignée style provides a mouth feel and structure, along with a bright fruit bouquet. For this vintage, the wine benefitted by fermenting and aging in stainless steel tanks. This maximized the vintage’s lovely fruit aromas. The wine was aged for five months and then bottled crisp and fresh, on February 21st, 2024.

Vineyard

Our Rosé of Pinot Noir was predominantly made from a select block of our acclaimed Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. This block provides a fruit profile that is ideal for rosé, with high acid and bright, red-berry aromas and flavors. In order to create a complex and familiar rosé profile, the remaining fruit came from select Sonoma Coast vineyards, including our Nightwing Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. 2023 was one of the coolest growing seasons in a decade, with very little temperature accumulation until July. Overall, the growing season was three weeks to a month later than the previous ten vintages. In some areas, proper ripening required patience and fortitude. While these conditions made growers nervous, for a cool-climate winemaker the vintage was ideal for producing beautifully aromatic, concentrated, and fruit-forward wines.

The 2020 Blanc de Noirs has delicate red fruit aromas of sun-ripened raspberry and pale strawberry, as well as notions of sweet cantaloupe. On the palate, the fruit is complemented by a toasty richness and exotic spice notes, with a bright and lively mousse adding to the wine’s full body, wonderful length, and sophisticated complexity.

Winemaking

MÉTHODE CHAMPENOISE

For Blanc de Noirs, I like picking the Pinot Noir on the slightly riper side to ensure we get red fruit characteristics. Because the Pinot Noir is riper you “risk” more color extraction, so in order to create a white wine from the red grapes the pressing needs to be extremely gentle. I picked 5 tons and pressed to get about 107gal/ton to achieve the color, acid, and flavor we were looking to achieve. The grapes were then pressed to a heavy press and reserved for our still rosé. Fermentation took place in tank at a cool 65º F to preserve fruit aromatics. When fermentation was complete the wine was barreled down and aged in 3-year-old French oak barrels to allow it to breathe, while not imparting any toast aromas.

Tirage:  In April of 2021, the cuvée was put into bottle with yeast, sugar, and riddling aid, which is called the Liquer de tirage, then sealed with a crown cap. A secondary fermentation occurred where the CO2 produced was trapped in the bottle to produce the bubbles we know and love. The wine was then aged in bottle en tirage for 30 months—almost three years! This is where the wine developed its unique flavors and aromas, which are a function of yeast autolysis and aging.

Riddling: In July of 2023, after 30 months en tirage, the bottles were riddled. Riddling moves the yeast from the bottom and sides of the bottle into the bottle’s neck by slowly rotating and increasing the angle of the bottle.

Disgorging:  In August of 2023, we disgorged, which is the removal of the sediment in the neck, and the addition of dosage to each bottle. Dosage is where we adjust the sweetness and flavors of the wine slightly while bringing the bottles to proper fill levels.

Dosage:

  • 8 mLs of Blanc de Noirs Liqueur d’Expedition (LEX @ 55Brix) per bottle
  • 8 mLs of 2020 Rued Clone Chardonnay per bottle
  • 6.9 g/L residual sugar

How to Serve and Open a Bottle of Sparkling Wine:

  • Serve chilled, 40-45º F, can be in an ice bath
  • Remove the foil covering the cork, there is a tear tab to help
  • Place your thumb over the top of the cork with the wire hood still in place, and untwist the tab to loosen the wire hood, do not remove your thumb from the top of the cork
  • Grasp the cork and neck of the bottle and tilt the bottle away from yourself and others at about a 45-degree angle.
  • Slowly twist the tilted bottle (not the cork), keep firm pressure on the cork to allow it to slowly ease itself out of the bottle, the cork should come out with a whisper, not a pop!
  • If using a flute, which preserves the bubbles, fill the glass 1/3 full, let the mousse die down, and then fill the flute all the way up.
Vintage

The season began with a warm winter, with no frost issues, and a mild spring that resulted in a nice, even fruit set. While the summer was quite warm, there were only a couple of short heat spikes, which ensured that the grapes were able to fully ripen while retaining the natural acidity we love. As a result, our Chardonnay crop was balanced and healthy, yielding wines with vibrant flavors and excellent depth and energy. The fruit for this wine was harvested on August 26, 2020 at a modest 20.9º Brix from Sangiacomo’s Kiser Block Chardonnay.

About this Wine

In 2020, Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen chose to create a Blanc de Blancs using Chardonnay from the famed Sangiacomo Family Kiser Ranch. Blanc de Blancs refers to making a white wine (Blanc) from white grapes (Blancs).

“This tasty Blanc de Blancs is sourced from the Kiser Block of Sangiacomo Vineyard’s Chardonnay, and it was handled in such a way as to extract maximum complexity. Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen utilized parts of each of three pressings to access elements of grip, acidity and freshness that make for a compelling wine. The cuvée spent six months in neutral French oak before bottling, then rested 30 months en tirage before disgorgement. The result is a zesty, bright lemon character on entry, accented with hints of toast that ride a creamy texture through a cleansing finish. I would use this as an aperitif — it’s a great way to start an evening of fine dining.”

This luxurious Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dense plum color and expressive fruit-forward aromas of blackberry and black currant, with sweet tobacco and toasty oak notes creating a rich and inviting nose. The palate has a fresh quality that gracefully showcases the fine-grained tannins and the dark berry and oak spice flavors as they build to a long, supple finish that will only improve with age.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested on September 30, 2021. All fruit was destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. Daily pump-overs during a five-day cold soak released the color and tannin. During fermentation, the grapes were gently punched down twice a day to keep the fermentation temperatures moderate and the fruit healthy for extraction. During an extended maceration, we tasted the wine daily until the optimum palate balance and tannin feel were achieved. We then pressed the finished wine off the skins and aged it for 22 months in 64% new French oak barrels and 36% once-filled barrels. Bottling occurred on August 4, 2022.

Exotic aromas of lemon zest, honey, ginger, and anise leap from the glass inviting a first sip. On the palate, this magnificent Chardonnay is a study in cool-climate purity and grace. Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters where they were gently pressed in order to maximize quality. This provides a distinct mouthfeel and texture. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. This wine spent its entire life in the barrel where it completed primary and secondary malo-lactic fermentations. After 10 months of aging in about 20% new French oak, the wine was blended and put into one new French oak barrel and into one-year-old barrels, where it was aged for another six months. Thus, the final blend has seen over 50% new French oak. To further increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. Deemed aged to perfection, it was bottled lovingly, on February 14th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2015 vintage had low yields compared to average Sonoma County years. Moderate temperatures, and weather conditions without rain or frost, developed the fruit slowly and evenly. With the low yields, many vineyards were harvested earlier than previous vintages. Here at MacRostie, we pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. Among its key vineyards, this blend combines the beautifully lush, fruit-forward character of Mirabelle Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, the lemon citrus flavors from the acclaimed Bacigalupi Vineyard, the white peach and pear notes of Goldrock Ridge on the far coast, the minerality of Kent Ritchie Vineyard, and the honey, ginger and mineral notes from Steve MacRostie’s own Wildcat Mountain Vineyard.

Vineyard

We are now in our second year of crafting master blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We named these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer deciphering codes in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our rich history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch, and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage—stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Key embodies everything that we know about making great Chardonnay.

“This label is coming into its own, and it’s a fine vintage from which to do so considering the scarcity of Napa Vally red wines from 2020 due to fires. No fire issues here — just pure Clone 43 Cabernet goodness on the bright side of the varietal spectrum. It is made in a nice tight style, with bright red fruit and dried herbs dancing together nicely. I would age this a good while in the cellar and wait for the elegance to emerge.”

For more than 30 years, MacRostie has focused on making benchmark Sonoma County Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. While this focus has allowed us to cultivate a remarkable level of experience, we are wine lovers who also find joy in exploring and discovering new regions and new wines. As a result, several years back, we created a new winery-within-a-winery here at MacRostie. We called it Clockwise—a name that captures many of the elements that are important to us from a winemaking perspective, including timing, wisdom, and knowledge. Winemaking

The 2018 growing season began with warm winter weather, before things turned cool and rainy in February, which prevented an early budbreak. While the rains continued, things warmed up again in March, providing ideal nutrients and growing conditions for the vines. From June onwards the weather was lovely and temperate, with sunny days and cool nights ensuring excellent flavor development and acid retention in the grapes. As harvest drew near, the weather turned warm providing a final push to ripeness. The grapes from this vineyard were picked on September 5, 2018.

Vintage

In order to maximize quality, while providing a distinct mouthfeel and texture, the harvested grapes went directly to press as whole clusters and were gently pressed. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent its entire life in barrel, where it completed primary and a partial secondary malolactic fermentation, which preserved its natural acidity. The wine was then aged on the lees for 11 months. In order to increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. A generous 25% new French oak, and 25% once-filled French oak barrels were used in order to broaden the mouthfeel and balance the acid. This Chardonnay was bottled on August 6, 2019.

Vineyard

This prized site in the Russian River Valley has been farmed for more than 40 years by renowned winegrower Kent Ritchie. The vineyard is planted to the Wente Selection of Chardonnay, which grows on gently rolling hillsides in sandy loam soils with striations of sandstone. The Russian River Valley’s famous clockwork fog keeps this site cool, and provides ideal conditions for growing a classic expression of Chardonnay.

When first poured out, the Tollini Vineyard Chardonnay offers lemon-lime aromas that mingle with a hint of juicy mango inviting a first sip. On the palate, tropical flavors of green pineapple and feijoa are underscored by a mouthwatering acidity that frames the lush purity of the fruit. The finish is long and supple, with a hint of rich citrus and baking spices reminiscent of fresh-baked lemon cookies.

  • “This wine offers subtle oak and a whole lot of butter to give it a rich, palate-clinging expression. It is full bodied, creamy in texture and has a lingering buttery finish.”

Winemaking

The harvested grapes were put directly as whole clusters into our tank press. A gentle press cycle was used to keep the tannin and bitterness out of the juice. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours and racked to barrel for primary and malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in 30% new, and 20% one-year old French oak barrels. The wine was bottled on August 6, 2019.

Vintage

Because the 2018 growing season was one of naturally high yields, we worked closely with our grower partners to thin the fruit in order to bring each vineyard into ideal balance. The clusters ripened slowly, and in general, 2018 was a late harvest. To ensure that the fruit was delivered to the winery cool and in pristine condition, the grapes were harvested by hand the nights of September 12-18, 2018.

Vineyard

Spotlighting our love for exploring different microclimates, soil types and regions for making exceptional cool-climate Chardonnays, Tollini Vineyard is located north of Sonoma County in the Redwood Valley appellation of Mendocino County. Situated 200 feet higher than the immediate surrounding areas, Tollini is planted within a cool “pocket” that ensures abundant hangtime and ideal flavor development. We sourced our grapes from prized blocks farmed by winegrower Alvin Tollini: Ricetti Ranch and Grandpa’s Block. Ricetti Ranch features older vines that produce wines with lovely perfume and complexity, while the more youthful vines of Grandpa’s Block exhibits bright acid and pure, vibrant fruit.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and age-worthy, Mirabelle Vineyard offers a beautiful expression of Russian River Valley Chardonnay. Robust and extremely fruit-forward with alluring layers of tropical guava, orange blossom, and perfumed gardenia, it is a rich and floral wine that builds to a long and impressively balanced finish.

Winemaking

The harvested grapes were put directly as whole clusters into our tank press. A gentle press cycle was used to keep excess tannins and bitterness out of the juice. The juice was cold-settled for 48 hours and racked to barrel for fermentation and aging. The wine was aged in 31% new, and 15% one-year old French oak barrels. The wine was bottled on August 16th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The vineyard is cordon pruned and planted to Clone 95 Chardonnay. This clone produces small clusters and small berries, which contribute to this wine’s pure, concentrated flavors and aromas. To ensure that the fruit was delivered to the winery cool and in pristine condition, the grapes were harvested by hand on the night of September 6th, 2022.

Vineyard

Mirabelle is a beautiful vineyard located along Wohler Road in the heart of the Russian River Valley. It is planted on the valley floor where dense fog frequently settles, keeping the ripening progress slow and steady. The site’s fertile soils lead to healthy vines that produce classic Russian River Valley Chardonnay aromas and flavors.

Tasting Notes

This luxurious Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dense plum color with a balanced entry, great weight, and lovely length. It bursts with aromas of spiced hot chocolate, cherry cola, and loads of black plum and cherry. On the palate, it is incredibly smooth and silky, revealing concentrated flavors of cocoa and licorice with a nice touch of toasty oak.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested in late September of 2014 and destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the grapes were pumped over two times a day for maximum extraction, with an extended maceration to achieve the color and tannin levels we were looking for. The wine was then pressed off of skins and aged for 30 months in 81% new oak—74% of which was French oak and 7% American. American oak has some very concentrated lactones that add rich coconut and vanilla notes. Using a small amount of American oak really accentuates the richness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottling occurred on October 31st, 2017.

Vineyard

For almost 30 years, MacRostie has focused on making benchmark Sonoma County Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. While this focus has allowed us to cultivate a remarkable level of experience, we are wine lovers who also find joy in exploring and discovering new regions and new wines. This is why, several years ago, we began incubating a new winery here at MacRostie. We called it Clockwise—a name that captures many of the elements that are important to us from a winemaking perspective, including timing, wisdom, and knowledge. Just like at MacRostie, the winemaking for Clockwise is guided by gifted Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen and winemaking icon Steve MacRostie. This exceptional 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from a prized single vineyard in the eastern part of the Oakville region of Napa Valley is the first red wine released by Clockwise.
