Tasting Notes

This luxurious Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dense plum color with a balanced entry, great weight, and lovely length. It bursts with aromas of spiced hot chocolate, cherry cola, and loads of black plum and cherry. On the palate, it is incredibly smooth and silky, revealing concentrated flavors of cocoa and licorice with a nice touch of toasty oak.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested in late September of 2014 and destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the grapes were pumped over two times a day for maximum extraction, with an extended maceration to achieve the color and tannin levels we were looking for. The wine was then pressed off of skins and aged for 30 months in 81% new oak—74% of which was French oak and 7% American. American oak has some very concentrated lactones that add rich coconut and vanilla notes. Using a small amount of American oak really accentuates the richness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottling occurred on October 31st, 2017.

Vineyard

For almost 30 years, MacRostie has focused on making benchmark Sonoma County Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. While this focus has allowed us to cultivate a remarkable level of experience, we are wine lovers who also find joy in exploring and discovering new regions and new wines. This is why, several years ago, we began incubating a new winery here at MacRostie. We called it Clockwise—a name that captures many of the elements that are important to us from a winemaking perspective, including timing, wisdom, and knowledge. Just like at MacRostie, the winemaking for Clockwise is guided by gifted Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen and winemaking icon Steve MacRostie. This exceptional 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from a prized single vineyard in the eastern part of the Oakville region of Napa Valley is the first red wine released by Clockwise.
