The color is an opulent and dense purple red color. Aromas of rich leather, forest floor and sweet chocolate greet you. The palate is rich and bold. Strong tannin meets flavors of chocolate-covered blueberries. The finish is still young, lengthy full tannins that linger.
The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermentors, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pumpovers and punchdowns. After 12 months of ageing in exclusively French oak barrels, 25% of which were new, we bottled in August of 2015.
2014 had ideal temperatures and growing conditions. The fruit came in the door healthy, ripe and luscious. The fruit was hand harvested in the cool evening hours on September 24, 2014.
The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from a vineyard farmed by the renowned Dutton Family. The Dutton family has been growing grapes in Sonoma County — specifically the Russian River Valley — for generations. Their fruit is highly prized, as their meticulous farming has shown consistency and quality over the years. Manzana vineyard is located in Green Valley of Russian River Valley, a sub-appellation known for its even colder temperatures which gives wines deeper color and intense aromatics. The best barrels from this vineyard were used to assemble this wine. Each was specifically selected for showing ideal and unique traits for this wine.
