Tasting Notes

The 2014 vintage produced an elegant expression of Pinot Noir from Thales Vineyard, with a soft entry and notes of orange peel, cranberry, Bing cherry, and cinnamon spice. The tannins are supple, yet firm, providing the structure for a long finish that only gets better as the wine sits in the glass.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermentors, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump overs and punch downs. This wine was aged 16 months in exclusively French oak barrels, 30% of which were new. It was bottled on February 23rd,2016.

Vintage

The 2014 vintage was generally balmy and free of adverse events. Under such conditions Mother Nature blesses us with fruit that is delicious and balanced. With diligent farming, this vineyard is really coming into its own. The fruit for this blend came from three key blocks that stood out for their profound expression: clone 667 in older block B; clone 23 from our terrace block G; and clone 2A from our sloping block D. These blocks were picked on August 29th, 2014 and September 6th, 2014.

Vineyard

Thale’s Vineyard is located in the northernmost part of the Russian River Valley in an area known as the Middle Reach. Named after Steve MacRostie’s wife, Thale(pronounced Thay-lee), this is MacRostie’s estate vineyard. The site’s 13 acres of Pinot Noir vines are comprised of clones 667, Pommard, 23, and 2A. Most of the vineyard was planted in 2009, and it features both valley floor and hillside contours. The site produces rich and ripe Pinot Noir with a vivid ruby color and rich tannin.
