Tasting Notes

Crafted from the beautifully aromatic 809 Chardonnay Clone, this wine leaps out of the glass with flirtatious layers of peach pie and jasmine. The orchard fruit and floral layers continue on the lush, rich palate, where lively underlying acidity lifts the fruit, adding poise and energy to a long, creamy finish.

Winemaking

The 2018 vintage was one of naturally high yields, prompting us to work closely with Dale Ricci to thin the fruit more than usual to bring the vineyard into ideal balance. 2018 was also a late harvest vintage. The clusters ripened slowly with extra hangtime allowing the development of more concentrated flavors. The clone for this Chardonnay is 809, which has unique, floral, almost Muscat-like aromas. The distinctive aromatic profile found in this vineyard and clone is what prompted us to bottle this exclusive and unique Chardonnay. The vineyard was picked on October 10, 2018.

Vintage

The grapes were harvested as whole clusters and pressed on the same day. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours before being racked into a temperature-controlled stainless steel tank where fermentation and aging were completed. While we normally ferment and age our Chardonnays in French oak barrels, we opted to preserve the unique characters of the 809 clone Chardonnay in this wine by forgoing the influence of oak. After aging for ten months this wine was bottled August 6, 2019.

Vineyard

Dale Ricci is a longtime farmer in the Sonoma Coast’s famed Carneros region. His vineyard lies along Ramal Road near San Pablo Bay, where fertile clay-loam soils and undulating hills combine with westerly afternoon winds to create an ideal terroir for growing Chardonnay.
