About this Wine

Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay always delivers something special and unique, and this vintage is no exception. Both intricate and exotic, this wine begins with alluring fruit aromas of Meyer lemon and fresh pineapple.

Single Vineyard

94 Points

“Wildcat Mountain Vineyard is owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. Its volcanic soils, strong maritime winds, and coastal fog contribute to the distinctive character of this lushly layered red, which opens with inspiring notes of cinnamon roll and cherry pie. A more complex mid-palate unfolds with jasmine, frankincense, and other exotic floral notes, leaving a trace of lavender and plum on the finish.”

Tasting Notes
Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay always delivers something special and unique, and this vintage is no exception. Both intricate and exotic, this wine begins with alluring fruit aromas of Meyer lemon and fresh pineapple. On the palate, a round, rich mouthfeel accentuates Wildcat’s signature high-tone notes of honey and spice. At the same time, thanks to Wildcat’s windy growing conditions, which thicken the grape skins, it has engaging structure and body.

  • “Brought up in 24% new French oak, the 2018 Chardonnay Wildcat Mountain is another terrific effort. White flowers, toasted spice, peach, and honeysuckle notes all dominate the nose, and it's fresh and lively, yet also textured and lengthy on the palate.”

Winemaking
The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 24% of the oak being new. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. The wine went through a partial malo-lactic fermentation to preserve its natural acidity. The very best barrels from each lot were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on August 7, 2019.
Vintage
Because the 2018 growing season was one of naturally high yields, we worked closely with our grower partners to thin the fruit in order to bring each vineyard into ideal balance. At Wildcat Mountain the yields are naturally held in balance. The clusters ripened slowly, and in general, 2018 was a late harvest. Grapes were picked from three distinct blocks planted to three different clones: 95, 76, and 15. Clone 76 and Clone 95 were picked on September 17 and Clone 15 was picked on September 21, 2018.
Vineyard
The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners, Nancy and Tony Lilly. At Wildcat, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site. Cool and challenging, it yields wines of great distinction.
