Winemaking

To provide a distinct mouthfeel and texture, the harvested grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent its entire life in barrel, where it completed primary and secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged on the lees for 13 months, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. Aging was in 44% once-filled French oak barrels and 11% new oak barrels. This conservative oak regime allowed the natural beauty of the wine to shine while imparting subtle toast and spice. It was bottled on December 7th, 2021.

Vintage

The season began with a warm winter with no frost issues and a mild spring that resulted in a nice, even fruit set. While the summer was quite warm, there were only a couple of short heat spikes, which ensured that the grapes were able to fully ripen while retaining the natural acidity we love. As a result, our Chardonnay crop was balanced and healthy, yielding wines with vibrant flavors and excellent depth and energy. Four clones (Mt. Eden, 809, 76, and 95) from four blocks of Nightwing were selected for this wine. The grapes were picked on two separate days, September 5th and September 17th, 2020.

Vineyard

This is the inaugural vintage from Nightwing Vineyard. It is named after the indigenous nocturnal birds that keep a watchful eye on the land. Nightwing is also a nod to the original guardian of the property, Vernon Morelli, a former WWII pilot who built a landing strip amidst the vineyards. Located in the Petaluma Gap, our new estate vineyard, perched at 1,200 feet above sea level, basks in cool ocean winds and long, sunny days.
