Winemaking

To preserve the bright, delicate character of the fruit, all of the grapes went direct to press as whole clusters and were then gently pressed. After settling, 80% of the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation, 12% of which were new, with 11% from once-used barrels. To provide freshness and focus to the blend, 20% of the wine stayed in stainless steel tanks for a cool fermentation and never went to barrel. The lots were aged on the lees for six months, with occasional lees stirring to increase richness and body. To achieve balance, a rich mouthfeel, and crisp acidity, only a partial secondary fermentation was completed. The blend was assembled in May of 2021, just prior to bottling, which occurred on May 28, 2021.

Vintage

The season began with a warm winter, with no frost issues, and a mild spring that resulted in a nice, even fruit set. While the summer was quite warm, overall there were only a couple of short heat spikes, which ensured that the grapes were able to fully ripen while retaining the natural acidity we love. As a result, or Chardonnay crop was balanced and healthy, yielding wines with vibrant flavors and excellent depth and energy. All of the grapes were hand-harvested between September 11 and October 28, 2020.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came from several exceptional Sonoma Coast vineyards, including the Sangiacomo and Hi Vista vineyards in Carneros, the Wohler and Mirabelle vineyards in the Russian River Valley, as well as sites farmed by the renowned Dutton and Martinelli families. The Petaluma Gap AVA is also represented by Lakeville Vineyard. Selected for their cool climates and unique growing conditions, these vineyards lend distinct and complex characteristics to our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.
