Tasting Notes

This wine has a high density, opulent red-blue hue, with alluring aromas of spice, earth, and a touch of floral potpourri. About 30% whole clusters were included, and as a result, the spice notes extend to the rich and creamy palate, where pronounced, yet elegantly integrated, tannins underscore the fruit and add complexity to this age-worthy wine.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 25% were new and 38% once filled. This enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on August 9th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10 to 30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The block we source fruit from is block 2.11 and features Clone 667, which was harvested on September 20th, 2022.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.
