Tasting Notes

From its graceful red/garnet hue to its delicate aromas of red berries, orange zest, citrus, and dried flower this is a captivating Pinot Noir. The red fruit and dried flower notes are echoed on the entry, where lovely tension frames the mouth-watering fruit flavors. Elegantly poised and pronounced, this fascinating wine will leave you intrigued and wanting a couple of bottles for your cellar to see what wonders aging brings.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed off skins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 22% were new oak and 55% one-year-old. We bottled the wine on July 31st, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. The grapes for this wine came from two prized blocks of Fiddlestix Vineyard, one on the floor of the vineyard and one on its rocky hillside. Both were harvested on September 14th, 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Fiddlestix Vineyard. Located at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in the acclaimed Sta. Rita Hills AVA, Fiddlestix Vineyard was planted in 1998 by famed Pinot Noir winemaker Kathy Joseph. It is designed with a unique east-west orientation that draws in ocean breezes and fog from the Pacific, with the fog often hanging over vines until mid-morning, and temperatures rarely exceeding 80 F. This, combined with well-drained soils, creates an intense wine with well-structured tannins.
