Tasting Notes

This wine is the palest yellow-green color. Aromas of fresh honeysuckle and jasmine waft from the glass, along with hints of fresh-cut baby grass and Key lime. As you taste the wine it is both bright and refreshing and soft on the palate, with mouth-filling flavors of rich golden apple and golden pear gliding to a luscious finish.

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, the grapes went directly to press as whole clusters and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouthfeel texture. 100% of the fermentation was completed in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatics. To ensure a bright, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, it did not go through malolactic fermentation. The wine was tank-aged for just 5 months before being bottled young and fresh on February 20th, 2024 so that it is ready for the spring and summer months of outdoor socializing.

Vintage

2023 was one of the coolest growing seasons in a decade, with very little temperature accumulation until July. Overall, the growing season was three weeks to a month later than the previous ten vintages. In some areas, proper ripening required patience and fortitude. While these conditions made growers nervous, for a cool-climate winemaker the vintage was ideal for producing beautifully aromatic, concentrated, and fruit-forward wines. 75% of the fruit was from Savona Vineyard and 25% from Hopkins River Ranch, with respective harvested on September 21st, 2023 and October 9th, 2024.

Vineyard

: For our 2023 Clockwise Sauvignon Blanc we worked with two Russian River Valley vineyards. Always searching for new and interesting sites, a MacRostie Club Member reached out to let us know she had some Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc for sale. I met her at her Savona Vineyard and we made a plan to work together. Savona’s vines are quite old and have a natural vine-to-vine variation that comes with age. Some vines produce grapes that are tart and crisp while others are floral and rich. The other vineyard we selected is Hopkins River Ranch. I have followed this vineyard for a long time and have even gone to their pumpkin patch and organic produce operation at Foggy River Farm on the same property. I reached out this year and we were in luck. This extremely low elevation, cool-climate, and fog-influenced property produce incredibly aromatic and high-toned Sauvignon Blanc with intense fruit.
