The aromas are rich and perfumed, with heady notes of flowers and toasted marshmallow that intensify as the wine opens up. The aromas are complemented by chalky minerality and a bright, crisp structure, with layers of red apple and tropical mango and banana gliding to a complex and refreshing finish.
The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to the barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 50% of the oak being once-used and 50% neutral, so as not to overpower the delicate flavors and aromas. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process.
The 2023 vintage produced amazing wines. It was one of the coolest and latest harvests in over a decade. Ripening took its time, and acids were high, which creates wines of distinct flavor and varietal specificity. We harvested our grapes from Olivet Lane at 21.9º Brix on October 12th, 2023—almost a month later than past years.
Planted by the Pellegrini family in 1975, today, Olivet Lane is managed by the fourth generation of the family to be involved in winegrowing. The vineyard, which is named for the olive trees at the property entrance, is located in the Santa Rosa Plain neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, on an undulating benchland of well-drained, gravelly, clay loam soil. The foundation of this wine is the coveted Old Wente selection, a heritage clone that has played a key role in some of California’s greatest Chardonnays.
