“Solid Rosé and the MacRostie name are becoming synonymous. This vintage is bright and breezy while maintaining a serious complexity. It is nice and dry, with tart strawberry and citrus offset by mixed dried herbs, all riding bright acidity through a mouthwatering finish. Just what Rośe should be. Well done!”

Winemaking

Rosé is a fun, yet challenging, wine to make. Achieving the right color is all about timing and vineyard choice. Color is the first lure of this wine, and it is crucial to have it just right. To give the wine fruit aromatics, a round mid-palate, fresh acidity, and a poignant finish, many vinification methods were used during winemaking. 45% of the fruit went directly to press, which produces a light and delicate pink color while bringing a bit more structure and mouthfeel to the wine. The other 55% was produced using the saignée method, which produces an aromatic, fruit-forward wine. A range of 2-to-48 hours of skin contact was used to vary the amount of color in each lot. Using both the direct-to-press and saignée style provides a mouth feel and structure, along with a bright fruit bouquet. For this vintage, the wine benefitted by fermenting and aging in stainless steel tanks. This maximized the vintage’s lovely fruit aromas. The wine was aged for five months and then bottled crisp and fresh, on February 21st, 2024.

Vineyard

Our Rosé of Pinot Noir was predominantly made from a select block of our acclaimed Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. This block provides a fruit profile that is ideal for rosé, with high acid and bright, red-berry aromas and flavors. In order to create a complex and familiar rosé profile, the remaining fruit came from select Sonoma Coast vineyards, including our Nightwing Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap. 2023 was one of the coolest growing seasons in a decade, with very little temperature accumulation until July. Overall, the growing season was three weeks to a month later than the previous ten vintages. In some areas, proper ripening required patience and fortitude. While these conditions made growers nervous, for a cool-climate winemaker the vintage was ideal for producing beautifully aromatic, concentrated, and fruit-forward wines.
