This beautiful wine offers a deep garnet color and alluring aromas of black currant and fig, as well as signature cool-climate Syrah layers of spice, espresso, licorice, cocoa, and caramel. On the palate, elegant floral notes of violet and lilac add an energetic lift to the powerful tannins and lush blue and black fruit flavors as the wine glides to a long creamy finish that only gets better as it evolves in the glass.

Winemaking

The fruit was picked by hand as whole clusters and hand-sorted at the winery into 1-ton fermentation bins. Half of the fruit was fermented as 100% whole cluster to emphasize the natural spiciness of a cool-climate Syrah. Following a 3-day cold soak, fermentation was kicked off using yeast to enhance aromatics and produce a healthy fermentation. Punch-downs occurred twice a day to give the cap oxygen and encourage color extraction. The wine was aged for 16 months in 60% new French oak and 40% once-filled barrels and was bottled on February 20th, 2024.

Vintage

While Syrah can grow in both warm and cool climates, at Clockwise we are fascinated by cool-climate Syrah, which is why we sought out fruit from the Vivio Vineyard in a niche area of Sonoma County called Bennett Valley. Because the geography of the valley creates a bowl that captures and holds fog, it is one of the coolest non-coastal regions of Sonoma County, and one of the latest vineyards to be harvested each year, with the grapes for our 2022 Clockwise Syrah picked on October 5th, 2022.

Vineyard

For more than 35 years, MacRostie has focused on making benchmark Sonoma County Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. While this focus has allowed us to cultivate a remarkable level of experience, we are wine lovers who also find joy in exploring and discovering new regions and new wines. As a result, several years back, we founded a winery called Clockwise—a name that captures many of the elements that are important to us from a winemaking perspective, including timing, wisdom, and knowledge. Just like at MacRostie, Clockwise is guided by renowned Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. We are thrilled to share our debut Syrah from the acclaimed Vivio Vineyard in Bennett Valley.

Winemaking

To provide a distinct mouthfeel and texture, the harvested grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent its entire life in barrel, where it completed primary and secondary malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was then aged on the lees for 10 months, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. Aging was in 22% new French oak barrels and 22% once-filled French oak barrels and. This conservative oak regime allowed the natural beauty of the wine to shine while imparting subtle toast and spice. It was bottled on August 2, 2022.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. We harvested the four clones of Chardonnay (72, Mt. Eden, 809, and 95) used for this wine in the cool, evening hours of September 6, 2021, at 24.4º Brix, and September 10, 2021, between 24.5º and 24.8º Brix.

Vineyard

This is our second vintage of Chardonnay from Nightwing Vineyard. The vineyard is named in honor of the indigenous nocturnal birds that keep a watchful eye on the land. Nightwing is also a nod to the original guardian of the property, Vernon Morelli, a former WWII pilot who built a landing strip amidst the vineyard. Located in the Petaluma Gap, our new estate vineyard, perched at 1,200 feet above sea level, basks in cool ocean winds and long, sunny days

About this Wine

In the world of California winegrowing, Kent Ritchie Vineyard is rightfully famous, and widely recognized as one of the state’s great Chardonnay vineyards. Located in the cool heart of the Russian River Valley, on a hillside along Eastside Road, the site was originally planted in 1972 to an array of heritage clones and selections, including the Wente selection. Decades later, these old vines yield some of California’s most highly prized Chardonnay. This wine was made exclusively from Wente selection grapes grown in sandy loam and sandstone soils. To accentuate the wine’s beautiful mouthfeel, while also underscoring its lovely fruit, Heidi aged it in her favorite Rousseau Allegro toast barrel for 10 months. With inviting lemon-sage aromas and elegant acidity, it is a vivid and alluring wine that strikes an effortless balance between its crisp citrus flavors and the creamy richness derived from barrel fermentation and aging in the finest French oak.

It's well worth following over the coming 4-6 years.”

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 18% of the oak being new and 24% being once used. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. The wine went through a partial malo-lactic fermentation to preserve its natural acidity. The very best barrels from each lot were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on November 3, 2020.

Vintage

2019 was a remarkable growing season for most of Sonoma county with ample winter rainfall creating wet soil and cool temperatures that delayed budbreak in some areas. Spring and summer brought moderate to slightly above average temperatures, late May rains delayed flowering slightly but helped to produce smaller looser clusters that produce very flavorful and concentrated wines. Grapes were picked from three distinct blocks planted to three different clones: 95, 76, and 15 and were picked on October 1, 2019

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners, Nancy and Tony Lilly. At Wildcat, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. The 2020 Wildcat Mountain Chardonnay has an opulent golden straw color in the glass. As you swirl your wine, aromas of honeysuckle and spring wildflowers waft. There is a signature aroma of honey and the faintest of butterscotch that is the calling card of Wildcat Chardonnay. The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 12 months, with 28% of the oak being new and 38% once used. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. The wine went through a partial malolactic fermentation to preserve its natural acidity. The very best barrels were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on November 18th, 2021.

Vintage

The season began with a warm winter with no frost issues and a mild spring that resulted in a nice, even fruit set. While the summer was quite warm, there were only a couple of short heat spikes, which ensured that the grapes were able to fully ripen while retaining the natural acidity we love. As a result, or Chardonnay crop was balanced and healthy, yielding wines with vibrant flavors and excellent depth and energy. • “Reductive in thick, dark fruit—a mélange of concentrated cherry and plum—this wine has supple texture and elongated tannins. The oak is well integrated and provides additional highlights of vanilla and baking spice.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. Blending fruit from different areas of the vineyard gives this wine depth and complexity. The Pinot Noir from Arrow Block provides the lush tannin and adds lively fruit aromatics. Saddle Block is an area of the vineyard that is very exposed to the wind, which contributes dense color and a long finish. After 10 months of aging in French oak barrels, 19% new oak, and 38% one-year-old, we bottled the wine on August 7th, 2019.

Vintage

Because the 2018 growing season was one of naturally high yields, we worked closely with our grower partners to thin the fruit in order to bring each vineyard into ideal balance. In general, 2018 was a late harvest, and the clusters ripened slowly. The grapes for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir came from two different blocks: Arrow Block and Saddle Block. Both are planted to Clone 667 but were planted in different years, 2000 and 1998, respectively. All of the grapes were hand-harvested in the cool early morning on September 24th, 2018.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested in late September of 2016 and destemmed and crushed into open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the grapes were pumped over two times a day for maximum extraction, with an extended maceration to achieve the color and tannin levels we were looking for. The wine was then pressed off of skins and aged for 24 months in 32% new French oak barrels. The bottling occurred on November 28th, 2018.

Vineyard

For almost 30 years, MacRostie has focused on making benchmark Sonoma County Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. While this focus has allowed us to cultivate a remarkable level of experience, we are wine lovers who also find joy in exploring and discovering new regions and new wines. This is why, several years ago, we began incubating a new winery here at MacRostie. We called it Clockwise—a name that captures many of the elements that are important to us from a winemaking perspective, including timing, wisdom and knowledge. Just like at MacRostie, the winemaking for Clockwise is guided by gifted Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen and winemaking icon Steve MacRostie. This exceptional 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is from a prized single vineyard in the acclaimed Yountville region of Napa Valley. It features three different clones: 7, 8, and 169, grown on a historic 140-year-old vineyard site. The 2023 The Key displays an array of enticing aromas that are both playful and sophisticated, with bright, lifted citrus and creamy lemon curd layers as well and notions of wet stone minerality and toasty French oak. On the palate, the entry is flirty and flowing, with a complex structure, lively energy, and lush tropical fruit and green melon flavors that glide to a long, luxurious finish.

Winemaking

Each vineyard was picked and fermented separately. The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters where they were gently pressed in order to maximize quality. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine remained in barrel where it completed a partial secondary malolactic fermentation. The wines were blended together then put back to barrel to age 17 months in 38% new French oak. Each barrel was hand selected as a component of this blend. To further increase richness and body, the lees were occasionally stirred.

Vintage

The 2023 vintage produced amazing wines. It was one of the coolest and latest harvests in over a decade. Ripening took its time, and acids were high, which creates wines of distinct flavor and varietal specificity. These conditions also produced wines that have naturally high acids and low alcohols, which is ideal for wine age-ability.

Vineyard

This blend combines fruit from five of our most prized vineyard sources, including the Mt. Eden 27, 95 and 809 clones from our Nightwing Estate Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap, Clone 4 from Sangiacomo Vineyard, an unknown heritage clone from Tollini Vineyard, and clones 76 and 95 from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. Average brix across the sites was 23.8º and picking dates spanned September 29 to October 17, 2023. Each component was carefully selected by our team to create the harmonious symphony that is The Key.

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Among its key vineyards, this blend combines fruit from five of our most prized sources; Sangiacomo Vineyard, Dutton Ranch, Mirabelle, Milovina, and Dale Ricci Vineyards. Each component is carefully selected by our winemaking team to create the harmonious symphony that is The Key.

Vineyard

We are now in our ninth vintage of crafting master blends of Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay. We named these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our rich history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch, and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage—stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Key embodies everything that we know about making great Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

The aromas are rich and perfumed, with heady notes of flowers and toasted marshmallow that intensify as the wine opens up. The aromas are complemented by chalky minerality and a bright, crisp structure, with layers of red apple and tropical mango and banana gliding to a complex and refreshing finish.

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to the barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 50% of the oak being once-used and 50% neutral, so as not to overpower the delicate flavors and aromas. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process.

Vintage

The 2023 vintage produced amazing wines. It was one of the coolest and latest harvests in over a decade. Ripening took its time, and acids were high, which creates wines of distinct flavor and varietal specificity. We harvested our grapes from Olivet Lane at 21.9º Brix on October 12th, 2023—almost a month later than past years.

Vineyard

Planted by the Pellegrini family in 1975, today, Olivet Lane is managed by the fourth generation of the family to be involved in winegrowing. The vineyard, which is named for the olive trees at the property entrance, is located in the Santa Rosa Plain neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, on an undulating benchland of well-drained, gravelly, clay loam soil. The foundation of this wine is the coveted Old Wente selection, a heritage clone that has played a key role in some of California’s greatest Chardonnays.
