Tasting Notes

Combining beautiful richness and energy, this wine is lifted with floral and saline notes. The earthiness of the nose is backed by a rich palate with lovely viscosity and texture, and an essence that tastes like the wind. The elegant nose, full palate, and crisp bright finish make this a wine of intrigue, complexity and longevity.

Winemaking

To provide a distinct mouthfeel and texture, the harvested grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters, and each block pressed separately. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine remained in barrel, where it completed primary and a partial (75%) secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged on the lees for 10 months, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. Aging was in 27% new French oak barrels and 22% once-filled French oak barrels. This conservative oak regime allowed the natural beauty of the wine to shine, while imparting subtle toast and spice.

Vintage

The 2023 vintage produced amazing wines. It was one of the coolest and latest harvests in over a decade. Ripening took its time, and acids were high, which creates wines of distinct flavor and varietal specificity. We harvested seven of the eleven blocks of Chardonnay we have planted at Nightwing consisting of separate clones: 72, Mt. Eden 27, 809, 95 and 124. This mosaic of clones resulted in a exceptionally balanced wine with perfumed floral aromatics and vibrant structure. We picked all blocks on October 11th of 2023 with the brix ranging from 23.4-24.1.

Vineyard

Our Nightwing Estate Vineyard is named in honor of the indigenous nocturnal birds that keep a watchful eye on the land. Nightwing is also a nod to the original guardian of the property, Vernon Morelli, a former WWII pilot who built a landing strip amidst the vineyard. Located in the Petaluma Gap, perched at 1,200 feet above sea level, the vineyard basks in cool ocean winds and long, sunny days

  • “Offers fresh and bright flavors of crisp apple, lemon meringue and pear, showing lemon oil, tangerine and orange blossom accents. There's an appealing fleshiness to the texture that works with the juicy acidity, with a hint of fresh ginger on the finish. Drink now.”

Winemaking

To provide a distinct mouthfeel and texture, the harvested grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters, and each block was pressed separately. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent its entire life in barrel, where it completed primary and partial (85% ) secondary malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was then aged on the lees for 10 months, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. Aging was in 23% new French oak barrels and 23% once-filled French oak barrels. This conservative oak regime allowed the natural beauty of the wine to shine while imparting subtle toast and spice. It was bottled on August 7th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. We harvested seven of the eleven blocks of Chardonnay we have planted at Nightwing. Clones 72, Mt. Eden, 809, 95 and 124. The 72 and 95 are classic Dijon with perfume and structure. Mt. Eden and 809 have floral characteristics that lift the aromatics and 124 is a Champagne clone that holds its acid and brings a vibrant energy. We picked the fruit between August 25th and September 5th of 2022 between 23º and 25º Brix.

Vineyard

This is our third vintage of Chardonnay from Nightwing Vineyard. The vineyard is named in honor of the indigenous nocturnal birds that keep a watchful eye on the land. Nightwing is also a nod to the original guardian of the property, Vernon Morelli, a former WWII pilot who built a landing strip amidst the vineyard. The 2021 Wildcat Mountain Chardonnay offers an opulent golden straw color, with aromas of honeysuckle and candied lemon wafting from the glass. There are also signature aromas of honey and a hint of butterscotch, which are calling cards of our Wildcat Chardonnay. As you sip the wine, it is crisp and vibrant, with natural acidity melding seamlessly with the rich, textured palate. This juxtaposition of bright acid and lush viscosity continues throughout the long finish, which is lively, fruit-forward, and satiny.

  • 90 Points: Audrey Frick JebDunnuck.com - July 2023
  • “A savory profile emerges in the 2021 Chardonnay Wildcat Mountain, revealing fresh aromas of sea spray, yellow flowers, and golden apple. This medium to full-bodied white offers a silky mouthfeel, with good freshness of acidity and notes of fresh pear, honeyed lemon, and almond. It’s a very attractive wine to drink over the next several years. Though The Key may be the most complete wine in the lineup, I prefer this style for more regular drinking.”

Winemaking
The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 12 months, with 24% of the oak being new and 24% once used. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. The wine went through a partial malolactic fermentation to preserve its natural acidity. The very best barrels were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on August 2, 2022.
Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Grapes were picked from two distinct blocks planted to two different clones: 76 and 95, on September 9 and 10, respectively in 2021.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners, Nancy and Tony Lilly. At Wildcat, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site. Cool and challenging, it yields wines of great distinction.

Winemaking

All grapes went directly to press as whole clusters, with gentle pressing to preserve the bright, delicate characteristics we prize. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation to give the wine just a hint of toast and spice. We used 18% new oak and 18% one-year-old oak (with the remainder being neutral) to allow the richness of the fruit to take center stage. After primary fermentation, the wine went through secondary malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity. This barrel-fermented wine was aged on the lees for nine months, with occasional stirring to increase richness. The final blend was assembled just prior to bottling, which occurred on August 2nd, 2023.

  • "Dried herb, forest, berry and black peppery cola combine on the nose and palate to delirious effect, making way for a velvety texture of medium-sized body and weight. Sourced from several vineyards, including some estate, this wine satisfies on every level."

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton macro bins. It was then hand sorted and gently destemmed into our 1 ton Super Tfermenters. The skins of the fruit are punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction with minimal harsh tannin from the seeds. When primary fermentation was complete the wine was pressed from the skins into barrel. French oak from a number of different cooperages, including 25% new oak barrels, 40% one-year-old French oak barrels, and the remaining neutral barrels, were used. The final blend was assembled prior to bottling which occurred August 8th, 2014. The wine was bottled using screw cap closures, to ensure highest quality.

Vintage

The 2013 vintage had ideal temperatures and growing conditions. The flavors were able to develop and show expressively. The vineyards were farmed meticulously in order to keep the vigorous canopy that develops in the famed-Goldridge Soil- balanced with the crop load on the vines. When done correctly the pure fruit and clarity of Russian River Valley vineyards shines through, as displayed in this wine. The fruit was hand-harvested on four different days: August 27 at 26.2 Brix, August 30 at 25.3 Brix, September 3 at 25.9 Brix, and September 19 at 24.9 Brix. The four distinct harvest dates indicate the individual nature of each site and what each lends to the complexity of this wine.

Vineyard

This wine is inspired by our exploration into the more western reaches of the Sonoma coast appellation. It exemplifies the fruit-driven Pinot Noir and concentrated rich flavors that one sees in this region. We work with a number of different vineyards in the Russian RiverValley including our own. Thale’s Vineyard and a neighboring place on Westside Rd called FlaxVineyard. Also, included are Tina Marie and Dutton’s Widdoes Ranch, both in the heart of Green Valley.

“This is MacRostie’s first pinot noir from outside of Sonoma County, sourced from a vineyard in Philo where the vines grow on an alluvial terrace 15 miles from the coast. That coastal influence is in the cranberry and brambly blackberry freshness of the fruit, with high-toned florals and deeper umami notes of cloud-ear mushrooms. Oak adds to the wine’s tannic weight, but those tannins are yielding and will merge into the fruit complexity with bottle age.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels—29% new and 29% one-year-old —which enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. The wine was bottled on October 31st, 2017.

Vintage

Slightly warmer than average, the 2016 growing season proved to be a very good one, with conditions nearly perfect for growing Pinot Noir. A well-timed cool spell in August slowed ripening down, enabling the fruit to develop evenly to full maturity without sugars being too high. Day Ranch Vineyard is planted to clone 667, and we harvested our fruit on September 8th, 2016.

Vineyard

Exploring yet another area in Coastal Northern California, we ventured a bit north to just outside of Sonoma County in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. This rustic landscape is near the town of Philo and is just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This vineyard is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside.

“Delicate on the nose, this wine truly comes alive on the palate, opening to notes of wet stone, damp earth, fresh raspberries, red currant, red cherry, cranberry, wild strawberry, cacao and toasted wood. The texture offers corduroy-like tannins and a solid backbone of acidity that gives vivacity to the drinking experience.”

Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels—24% new and 43% one-year-old—which enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled September 1, 2021.

Vintage

The season began with a warm winter, with no frost issues, and a mild spring that resulted in a nice, even fruit set. While the summer was quite warm, there were only a couple of short heat spikes, which ensured that the grapes were able to fully ripen while retaining the natural acidity we love. As a result, our crop was balanced and healthy, yielding wines with vibrant flavors and excellent depth and energy. Day Ranch Vineyard is planted to many different clones. We pulled fruit from Block 2.9, Block 2.11, and 2.18, which are planted to Clones 667, 115, and 91. Harvest occurred between September 17 and 26, 2020.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.
