“From a well-known site in the Russian River Valley, the 2017 Chardonnay Charles Heintz Russian River Valley offers an exotic honeyed grapefruit, crushed citrus, white flower, and tangerine nose. It's rich, has a viscous, layered texture, good concentration, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a singular, exotic (which is a hallmark of this vineyard) Chardonnay to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.”

The first impression of the aromas is one of exotic complexity, with classic citrus layers and tropical notes of Brazilian Feijoa fruit and honey. Though supple and mouth-filling on the palate, a vibrant streak of acidity adds poise and precision to the generous fruit, while drawing the flavors to a bright, potent finish.

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, all grapes went direct to press as whole clusters. After pressing and settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. Once dry and finished with malo-lactic fermentation, the lots were aged in barrel for 10monthson the lees, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. On order to offer some subtle oak influence, this wine was aged in French oak barrels, 86% of which were one-year-old, with no new oak used. The wine was then bottled on August 13th, 2018.

Vintage

The 2017 growing season started off as a wet one. Record rainfall through April invigorated the vines and bolstered canopies. Moderate-to-warm temperatures followed, allowing the vines to bloom and mature fruit in a balanced and tempered way. We did apply more leafing in our canopy management to counter the invigorating effects of the rain. All of our Chardonnay blocks were picked prior to the devastating wine country fires in early October, leaving all wine lots free of possible smoke influence. Grapes were picked on September 26th, 2017.

Vineyard

Charles Heintz has been growing premium Chardonnay grapes for decades. His namesake vineyard is located in the westernmost part of the Russian River Valley, making it our coolest climate site. Charlie himself has said, “It’s like growing Chardonnay in a rain cloud out here.”

Tasting Notes

From its deep, inky purple color to its gorgeous aromas of black cherry, sweet tobacco leaf, plum, and baking spices, this is a dazzling Carneros PinotNoir. On the palate, it is lush and supple, with velvety tannins underscoring vibrant flavors of blackberry, spice, and subtle French oak, all of which carry through to a bright, soft, and long-lasting finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. The wine was put into French oak barrels, with 30% new oak. After 10 months of aging, the wine was bottled on August 9th, 2016.

Vintage

The 2015 vintage got off to an early start and delivered fairly warm weather throughout the growing season. While overall yields were extremely low, the quality was exceptional, with the grapes showing amazing concentration. With no threat of rain in sight, we hand harvested the grapes exactly when we wanted to in the cool evening hours of September 2nd, 2015.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Glass House Vineyard, which is named for the striking modern home tucked in the middle of the vineyard. GlassHouse is located on the western edge of Carneros, where it is strongly influenced by the onshore winds that channel through the Petaluma Gap. It also features volcanic soils that contribute to the dense color and demeanor of this wine.

Tasting Notes

This wine has a high density, opulent red-blue hue, with alluring aromas of spice, earth, and a touch of floral potpourri. About 30% whole clusters were included, and as a result, the spice notes extend to the rich and creamy palate, where pronounced, yet elegantly integrated, tannins underscore the fruit and add complexity to this age-worthy wine.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 25% were new and 38% once filled. This enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on August 9th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10 to 30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The block we source fruit from is block 2.11 and features Clone 667, which was harvested on September 20th, 2022.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.

“It might not be a stretch to surmise that the relatively new Petaluma Gap AVA became one largely due to the fruit that has come from the Gap’s Crown Vineyard. It does particularly well in the hands of MacRostie winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen in the 2021 vintage, with this combination of deep cherry and raspberry fruit, dry earth minerality and fall spice, balanced with ‘house style’ acidity and finishing long and toasty. Beautiful!”

  • "Leading off the Pinot Noirs, the appellation 2019 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast reveals a light ruby hue to go with tart cherry and strawberry fruits, a medium-bodied, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and classy, almost Russian River-like notes of spice, cola, and savory flowers. It's a rock-solid, impressive Pinot Noir to enjoy over the coming 5-6 years."

Winemaking

The majority of the grapes were destemmed into small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of our fruit was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 33% new French oak was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine, and to add mid-palate richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on August 31, 2020.

Vintage

2019 was a remarkable growing season for most of Sonoma County, with ample winter rainfall creating wet soils and cool temperatures that
delayed budbreak in some areas. Spring and summer brought moderate to slightly above-average temperatures, with late-May rains slightly delaying flowering, while helping to produce the smaller, looser clusters that produce extremely flavorful and concentrated wines. Grapes were harvested by hand between September 4 and September 25, 2019.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from a handful of top vineyards throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, with a focus on some of the finest sub-appellations within the region. The blend includes grapes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Dale Ricci’s Vineyard in Carneros, Noble Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap, and Wohler Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Due to the cool coastal influences that shape the climate at all of these vineyards, they produce amazing Pinot Noir. At the same time, the diversity of these sites creates the foundation for complex aromatics and beautifully layered flavors in the final blend.

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, the harvested grapes went directly to press as whole clusters and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouthfeel texture. After settling, the Kiser Ranch juice, which represents 80% of the blend, was racked to a stainless steel tank for a cool, tank fermentation—an approach that puts the emphasis on fruit aromas. To provide richness and aromatic complexity to the final wine, the remaining juice was racked to French oak barrels for fermentation

Vintage

The 2015 vintage started with an early bud break that accelerated the vintage. We had heat accumulation that added up quickly, which led to an earlier pick compared to most vintages. All three of the ranches were picked before September 20th, 2015. Despite the early picking date, the fruit maintained high acid levels, which is true to our traditional style for this wine.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from three different blocks of the famed Sangiacomo Vineyard, with the majority of the fruit coming from the Kiser Ranch and Rich Kiser Ranches. A small portion came from Roberts Road, which is more exposed to the winds from the Petaluma Gap. For three generations, the Sangiacomo family has been growing grapes in and around the town of Sonoma. Recognized as master winegrowers, their fruit is highly prized for its consistent quality and delicious flavor profiles.
