  • “Good, concentrated cherry flavors and a mouthwatering texture align this medium-bodied wine for myriad food pair¬ings from mushrooms to salmon to roast chicken. Moderate tannins brace the red and black cherries, cranberries and cloves that open up as you sip."

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with a select yeast strain was followed by a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 10 months in 48% new French oak, and 15% one-year-old French oak barrels. Bottling took place on August 17, 2022.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes were exceptional. Thale’s Vineyard was harvested on three different days: September 3, 4, and 8 of 2021. Grapes from seven of the 11 blocks were used to create this complex and delicious blend.

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes were exceptional. The grapes from Walala were harvested by hand in the cool evening hours of September 8th, 2021.

It is a majestic site located at the rugged coastline of the Pacific Ocean, near the town of Annapolis where cool maritime breezes provide optimal growing conditions for Pinot Noir. At 1200 feet of elevation, it is positioned above the fog line with bountiful sunshine to ripen the grapes even given the extremely cool temperatures. We selected grapes from two different blocks of Walala planted to two different clones: 115 and 828. The soils are rocky and well-drained, which accentuates the intensity and rustic nature of the aromas and flavors.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Wildcat Mountain Pinot Noir displays an opulent color density and alluring aromas of sweet plum and rich, ripe boysenberry, underscored by notes of roasted coffee and toasty oak. On the entry, it is powerful and expressive, with flowing tannins and robust flavors of blackberry, black cherry, bramble, and black tea that dance across the palate. As it opens, the barrel toast emerges adding complexity and length to a finish that is both supple and strong.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, with 33% new oak and 29% one-year-old. The Pinot Noir from Arrow Block provides lush tannins and lively fruit aromatics, while the wind-exposed Saddle Block contributes dense color and a long finish. We bottled the wine on July 31st, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The grapes for this wine came from two prized blocks: Arrow Block and Saddle Block. Both were planted to Clone 667, in 2000 and 1998 respectively, and both were harvested on August 23rd, 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. On Wildcat Mountain, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site—cool and challenging—and produces wines of great distinction.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-harvested and gently destemmed into small one-ton fermenters to preserve the style of each vineyard and clone. After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted about three weeks. The wines were then put straight to French oak barrels as free run. After 10 months of aging, in 20% new and 20% one-year-old oak, we blended the 20 barrels of The Loch into tank and then changed what barrels the wine went back into. It was then aged an additional six months in 30% new French oak and 15% one-year-old oak until The Loch was deemed aged to perfection and was bottled on March 1, 2023.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. The grapes for our 2021 The Loch came from many of the sources for our single-vineyard offerings. Day Ranch, Klopp Ranch, Thale’s Vineyard, Dutton Winkler Vineyard, and Nightwing Vineyard are all represented. All grapes were lovingly hand-harvested between August 28 and September 16, 2021.

Vineyard

Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our long history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch is our consummate Pinot Noir blend, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage—stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Loch embodies everything that we know about making great Pinot Noir. We named our pinnacle Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blends The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a U.S. Army cryptographer in Europe.

Winemaking

The majority of the grapes were destemmed into small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of the fruit was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 30% new French oak was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine and to add mid-palate richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on May 24th-26th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage to vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from a handful of top vineyards throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, with a focus on some of the finest sub-appellations within the region. The blend includes grapes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Other vineyards located in the Russian River Valley include River Road Ranch, the Dutton family’s Winkler and Calesa vineyards, and the Sangiacomo’s Tallgrass and Huichica vineyards in Carneros. We were also excited to include fruit from our new Nightwing Estate Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap AVA.

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton macro bins. It was then hand sorted and gently destemmed into our 1 ton Super T fermenters. The skins of the fruit are punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction with minimal harsh tannin from the seeds. When primary fermentation was complete the wine was pressed from the skins into barrel. French oak from a number of different cooperages. The final blend was assembled prior to bottling which occurred August 15th, 2015. The wine was bottled using screw cap closures, to ensure highest quality.

Vintage

The 2014 vintage allowed flavors to develop and show expressively. The vineyards were farmed meticulously in order to keep the vigorous canopy that develops in the famed-Goldridge Soil- balanced with the crop load on the vines. When done correctly pure fruit and clarity of Russian River Valley vineyards shines through, as displayed in this wine. The fruit was hand-harvested on three different days: September 6th, September 8thand September 22ndof 2014. The four distinct harvest dates indicate the individual nature of each site and what each lends to the complexity of this wine.

Vineyard

This wine is inspired by our exploration into the more western reaches of the Sonoma Coast appellation. It exemplifies the fruit-driven Pinot Noir and concentrated rich flavors that one sees in this region. We work with a number of different vineyards in the Russian River Valley including our own, Thale’s. This wine was blended from fruit from two Dutton properties, Cummings Vineyard, and a small portion from Thale’s Vineyard.

After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted about three weeks. The wine was then put straight to barrel as free run. After 10 months of aging, the wine was blended to create The Loch and put into three specifically selected New French oak barrels for another six months of aging. Once deemed aged to perfection and ready for bottle, The Loch was bottled on June 15th, 2016.

Vintage

The 2014 vintage was a classic Sonoma County year. Moderate temperatures, and weather conditions without rain or frost, developed the fruit slowly and evenly. Here at MacRostie, we pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. This artful blend was made from our very finest blocks and barrels of Pinot Noir from a handful of vineyards that span the Sonoma Coast. From Carneros to the Petaluma Wind Gap, Russian River Valley, and the Far Coast, the fruit for our debut vintage of The Loch was harvested from September through October of 2014.

Vineyard

In 2014, after more than a quarter century of making wine, we crafted our first Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We called these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer deciphering codes in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery, with our rich history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch, and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine from the very finest vineyards we partner with. • “This is a soft, delicate and lightly styled red from the appellation, earthy and quietly rich in caramelized oak and baked cherry. It has a nice balance of nutmeg and cola on the finish.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. Blending fruit from different areas of the vineyard and different clones gives this wine depth and complexity. The Pinot Noir from Arrow Block provides the lush tannin and adds lively fruit aromatics. Saddle Block is an area of the vineyard that is very exposed to the wind, which contributes dense color and a long finish. After 10 months of aging in French oak barrels, 30% new oak, and 32% one-year-old, we bottled the wine on August 17th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 vintage started out with an early bud break followed by a warm growing season. Just when we were about to start picking we had a cool spell in late August. This helped slow things down and spread out the harvest. The grapes for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir came from a few different blocks of Wildcat Mountain. Clone 667 from the Arrow and Saddle blocks made up the majority of the blend, with a small amount being Pommard Clone 5. All of these grapes were hand harvested in the cool early mornings on different days from September 9th through September 22nd, 2016.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. There, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site—cool and challenging—and produces wines of great distinction.

Tasting Notes

This wine displays an opulent, dense purple-red color, and enticing aromas of brandied cherry and potpourri. Perfumed oak enhances both the aromas and mouthfeel. On the palate, it strikes a lovely balance between firm, rich tannins and a supple, round mouthfeel. The finish is youthful and firm, ensuring that this beautiful wine will age well for many years to come.

Winemaking
The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. After 10 months of ageing in exclusively French oak barrels (30% new, and 30% one-year-old), we bottled on July 31st, 2018.
Vintage

The 2017 vintage followed a cool wet winter. The soils were wet and rich, which required meticulous care with cover crop management and canopy management. This vineyard is planted to an unusual array of different clones from Mary Elke’s history. The two clones in this blend are the Stang Davis clone and the VVM clone (named for Vyborny Vineyard Management, from whom Mary sourced budwood). The fruit was hand-harvested at night on two distinct dates due to differences in ripening—September 12th and 20th of 2017.

Vineyard

Donnelly Creek was planted by a renowned grape grower, Mary Elke, in 1991. The vineyard is located in Anderson Valley near the town of Boonville. It is just 18 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean on an alluvial terrace alongside Anderson Creek.

Putnam Vineyard is located on the far Sonoma Coast, just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the very northwestern part of the appellation near the town of Annapolis.
