The first impression of the aromas is one of exotic complexity, with classic citrus layers and tropical notes of star fruit, mango and lychee. On the palate, the complex aromas give way to crisp and bright Meyer lemon flavors that glide to a long, giving finish. Oak shadings are just enough to add subtle nuances to this vibrant and beautifully balanced Chardonnay.

  • "Olive, fig and candied lemon peel provide an exotic complexity to this vineyard-designate, from the famous sandy Goldridge soil-site in Occidental. Salty oak and sea spray add a minerality that's welcome against a full-bodied palate flecked in tart, light acidity."

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, all grapes went direct to press as whole clusters. After pressing and settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. Once dry and finished with malolactic fermentation, the lots were aged in barrel for 10 months on the lees, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. This wine was aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, and 40% one-year-old, to offer some subtle oak influence. The wine was then bottled on August 16th, 2017.

Vintage

The vineyard’s 40-year-old vines were planted using wide spacing during an era when larger tractors dictated that plenty of room be provided to perform the farming work. The large, sprawling Clone 4 Chardonnay vines are trained using quadrilateral trellising on AXR rootstock. Sandy Goldridge soils provide the vines fertile ground for strong growth. 2016 had early an bud break, but cool temperatures in August slowed down the harvest leading to beautifully developed flavors and long hangtime. Harvested by hand, this fruit arrived at the winery healthy and ripe on September 30th, 2016.

Vineyard

Charles Heintz has been growing premium Chardonnay grapes for decades. His namesake vineyard is located in the westernmost part of the Russian River Valley and is therefore our coolest climate site. Charlie himself has said, “It’s like growing Chardonnay in a rain cloud out here.”

From the far Sonoma Coast to the Russian River Valley to Carneros, this complex, layered wine spotlights the history and breadth of the MacRostie vineyard program. Exotic aromas of passion fruit, peach and lime zest leap from the glass inviting a first sip. On the palate, this magnificent Chardonnay is a study in cool-climate purity and grace. Not only has extended aging in the finest French oak given this wine an appealing golden color, it has imparted a lovely hint of perfumed oak that adds nuance and depth to the bright citrus flavors, which carry through to a long, sophisticated finish.

  • “Briny lemon and tangerine lift a creamy lush personality buoyant in complementary and well-integrated acidity. This wine offers a wealth of succulence and complexity, trafficking in bold flavors and structure.”

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters where they were gently pressed in order to maximize quality. This provides a distinct mouthfeel and texture. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. This wine spent its entire life in barrel where it completed primary and secondary malo-lactic fermentations. After 10 months of aging in about 20% new French oak, the wine was blended and put into13% New and 63% once filled oak. Thus, the final blend has seen over 30% new French oak. To further increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. Deemed aged to perfection, it was bottled on February 14, 2018.

Vintage

We are now in our third year of crafting master blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We named these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer deciphering codes in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our rich history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage — stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Key embodies everything that we know about making great Chardonnay.

Vineyard

Here at MacRostie, we pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. Among its key vineyards, this blend combines the beautiful lush, fruit-forward character of Mirabelle Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, the lemon citrus flavors from the acclaimed Bacigalupi Vineyard, the minerality of Kent Ritchie Vineyard, and the honey, ginger and mineral notes from Steve MacRostie’s own Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. Prized pieces of Dutton Ranch and Sangiacomo’s Roberts Road Vineyard merry harmoniously into The Key.

Winemaking

The harvested grapes went directly to press as whole clusters in order to maximize quality and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouthfeel and texture. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine spent its entire life in barrel where it completed primary and secondary malolactic fermentations and was aged on the lees for 11 months. In order to increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. The Kent Ritchie Chardonnay has a delicate nature so a modest 18% new French oak was used in order to keep the oak and fruit in balance. This Chardonnay was bottled on August 15th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 growing season was a stellar vintage. Concentrated flavors developed early in the year at a low harvest Brix. We harvested early on August 22nd, 2016. This captured the crisp fruit and mineral qualities this unique site offers.

Vineyard

This prized site in the Russian River Valley has been farmed for more than 40 years by renowned winegrower Kent Ritchie. The vineyard is planted to Wente Selection Chardonnay. Situated on gently rolling hills, the soil is sandy loam with striations of sandstone. The famous clockwork fog of the Russian River Valley keeps this vineyard cool and provides ideal conditions for growing a classic expression of Chardonnay.

Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay always delivers something special and unique, and this vintage is no exception. Both intricate and exotic, this wine begins with alluring aromas of Asian pear and fragrant orange blossom. On the palate, a round, rich mouthfeel accentuates Wildcat’s signature high-tone notes of honey and spice. At the same time, thanks to Wildcat’s windy growing conditions, which thicken the grape skins, it has beautiful structure and body.

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 22% of the oak being new. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. Once malolactic conversion was complete, the wine was left to age. The very best barrels from each lot were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on August 16th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 vintage had early bud break and an aggressive growing season. Then just when we were about to pick, cool temperatures in August slowed everything down. Grapes were picked from five distinct blocks planted to five different clones: 95, 76, 4, 17, and 15. Each block had a unique harvest picking date between September 13th and 28th, 2016.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. At Wildcat, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site. Cool and challenging, it yields wines of great distinction.

“Sourcing from vineyards in Carneros, the Russian River Valley, and the Petaluma Gap, winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen works with such prestigious growers as the Duttons, Sangiacomos, and Martinellis to make this spiritual white. It possesses an inner glow thanks to the juiciest peach, the sweetness of honeysuckle, and a splash of tangerine, which join underlying minerality, a lift of acidity, and a touch of vanilla nougat. The pineapple juice–like finish is memorable.”

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. The 2016 vintage started out with an early bud break followed by a warm growing season. Just when we were about to start picking, we had a cool spell in late August. Thishelpedslow things down and spread out the harvest. With no threat of rain in sight, we hand harvested the grapes exactly when we wanted to in the cool evening hours of September 17th, 2016

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Manzana Vineyard, which is farmed by the renowned Dutton Family. The Duttons have been growing grapes in Sonoma County—specifically the Russian River Valley—for generations. Because they are known for their meticulous farming and consistent quality vintage after vintage, their fruit is highly prized. Manzana is located in Green Valley, a sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley known for its cool temperatures. For Pinot Noir, this unique climate results in deeper colors and intense aromatics. The best barrels from Manzana Vineyard were used to make this wine, with each specifically selected for its unique and ideal traits.

Our debut vintage of Thale’s Vineyard Pinot Noir displays enticing aromas of wild strawberry underscored by layers of rich leather, tobacco, and resin. These elements are echoed on the palate, where they mingle with abundant spicy red fruit flavors that add dimension and complexity. While the grip and staying power of the tannins promise a long life for this wine, it will benefit from decanting in its youth.

Winemaking

The grapes were gently destemmed into small open-top fermentors, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 16 months exclusively in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. It was bottled on February 23rd, 2015.

Vintage

The warm 2013 season provided ideal temperatures and growing conditions at Thale’s Vineyard. To counter the robust youthfulness of the vines, we thinned the crop to just 2 tons per acre. This ensured that the vines stayed healthy and strong while yielding a wine with rich tannin. The fruit for this blend was predominantly Clone 667 grapes from the vineyard’s prized Block B, with the remaining grapes being Clone 2A from Block A. Both blocks were picked on August 27th.

Vineyard

Located just off Westside Road, and surrounding our beautiful MacRostie EstateHouse, Thale’s Vineyard is situated in the far northern part of the Russian River Valley. Named after founder Steve MacRostie’s wife, Thale (pronounced Thay-lee), the vineyard’s14 acres of Pinot Noir feature four different clones: 667, Pommard, 23, and 2A. Predominantly planted in 2009, Thale’s Vineyard features both valley floor and hillside blocks. The site yields a rich and ripe expression of Pinot Noir with great color and rich tannin.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested by hand and gently destemmed exclusively into small one-ton fermenters to focus the style of each vineyard and clone. After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted about three weeks. The wine was then put straight to French oak barrels as free run. After 10 months of aging, the wine was blended to create The Loch, aged in ten barrels, four new and six one-year-old. After another six months in oak, The Loch was deemed aged to perfection, and was bottled lovingly on February 14, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 vintage started out with an early budbreak followed by a warm growing season. Just when we were about to start picking, we had a cool spell in late August. This helped slow things down and spread out the harvest. Here at MacRostie, we pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. This artful blend was made from our very finest blocks and barrels of Pinot Noir from a handful of vineyards that span the Sonoma Coast. The Loch predominately comes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard, which gives The Loch vibrancy and length. A cooler Dutton property in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley, brings blackberry and black cherry fruit and rich tannins. Wohler Vineyard in Russian River Valley adds earthy notes of soft leather and tobacco. Champlin Creek, a volcanic hillside site in Carneros, provides red fruit and baking spices of clove and cinnamon.
