About this Wine

The 2021 vintage marks MacRostie’s debut Petaluma Gap AVA wine. The Petaluma Gap is located about 30 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and is defined by the wind that funnels cooling breezes and fog into the region. Thick skins and low yields result in dark color, exotic spice notes, and a rich, but lifted, palate presence.

This Pinot Noir has a gorgeous black fruit profile with aromatic layers of blackberry, black cherry, herbal tobacco, and roasted coffee, as well as floral notes of violet and rose petals. The color is dark and inky—a signature of the Petaluma Gap AVA. On the palate, it is concentrated but elegant, with lush flavors of red raspberry and dusty oak supported by lushly textured tannins that linger on the long finish.

  • “A fresh, sleek style, with damson plum and bitter cherry notes lined with dried rose petal and iris hints. Features a flash of sous-bois on the finish. Drink now through 2026.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. This wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels—29% new and 7% one-year-old—which enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on July 27, 2022.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Fruit for our Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir was sourced from Rodgers Creek and our own Nightwing Estate Vineyard. Harvest occurred between September 10 and 15, 2021.

Vineyard

Though we have made vineyard-designate wines from different sites in the Petaluma Gap AVA since its establishment in 2018, the 2021 vintage marks MacRostie’s debut Petaluma Gap AVA wine. The Petaluma Gap is located about 30 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and is defined by the wind that funnels cooling breezes and fog into the region. Thick skins and low yields result in dark color, exotic spice notes, and a rich, but lifted, palate presence.

A Pinot Noir with inky dark purple color. An extreme example of the fruit-forward nature wines from the Russian River Valley can exude. Blueberry, blackberry, and black cherry aromas waft from your glass. As you taste the wine these flavors are echoed on the luxurious palate, which combines a creamy mouthfeel, with River Road’s signature acidity, yielding a beautifully balanced Pinot Noir with the weight and richness to make it a showstopper in our 2021 vintage lineup.

Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. Blending fruit from different areas of the vineyard and different clones gives this wine depth and complexity. The Pinot Noir from Arrow Block provides the lush tannin and adds lively fruit aromatics. Saddle Block is an area of the vineyard that is very exposed to the wind, which contributes dense color and a long finish. After 10 months of aging in French oak barrels, 42% new oak, and 7% one-year-old, we bottled the wine on August 14th, 2018.

Vintage

The 2017 vintage followed a cool, very wet winter. The soils were moist and rich, which at many of our vineyard sites would require extra meticulous care with cover crop management and canopy management. However, with Wildcat Mountain having such stressed conditions and unfertile volcanic soil this did not impact the site. There was a heat spike at the end of August, which led to us picking this vineyard in mid-September. The grapes for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir came from two different blocks of Wildcat Mountain, Arrow Block, and Saddle Block. Both are planted to Clone 667 but were planted in different years, 2002 and 1998 respectively. All of these grapes were hand harvested in the cool early morning on September 13th, 2017,

  • “I always like this bottling for its dusty dry earth minerality that deepens the cherry and rhubarb fruit profile. Those aromas carry through on the palate, with the dusty character in front. The grapes were hand-harvested and gently destemmed into small one-ton fermenters to preserve the style of each vineyard and clone. After a three-day cold soak, fermentation began and lasted about three weeks. The wines were then put straight to French oak barrels as free run. After 10 months of aging, in 20% new and 20% one-year-old oak, we blended the 20 barrels of The Loch into tank and then changed what barrels the wine went back into. It was then aged an additional six months in 30% new French oak and 15% one-year-old oak until The Loch was deemed aged to perfection and was bottled on March 1, 2023.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. The grapes for our 2021 The Loch came from many of the sources for our single-vineyard offerings. Day Ranch, Klopp Ranch, Thale’s Vineyard, Dutton Winkler Vineyard, and Nightwing Vineyard are all represented. All grapes were lovingly hand-harvested between August 28 and September 16, 2021.

Vineyard

Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our long history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch is our consummate Pinot Noir blend, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage—stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Loch embodies everything that we know about making great Pinot Noir. We named our pinnacle Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blends The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a U.S. Army cryptographer in Europe.

Accolades
  • 92 Points: Virginie Boone Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/18
  • "Juicy, with a medium-built backbone of intense fresh acidity, this wine is savory in spirit and style, with large helpings of black tea, cardamom and forest pine. The fruit component is defined in cherry, cola and vanilla."

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pumpovers and punchdowns. After 10 months of ageing in exclusively French oak barrels, 32% of which were new, we bottled on August 1, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 vintage started out with an early bud break followed by a warm growing season. Just when we were about to start picking, we had a cool spell in late August. This helped slow things down and spread out the harvest. With no threat of rain in sight, we hand harvested the grapes exactly when we wanted to in the cool evening hours of September 17, 2016.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from Manzana Vineyard, which is farmed by the renowned Dutton Family. The Duttons have been growing grapes in Sonoma County — specifically the Russian River Valley — for generations. Because they are known for their meticulous farming and consistent quality vintage after vintage, their fruit is highly prized. Manzana is located in Green Valley, a sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley known for its cool temperatures. For Pinot Noir, this unique climate results in deeper colors and intense aromatics. The best barrels from Manzana Vineyard were used to make this wine, with each specifically selected for its unique and ideal traits.

Tasting Notes

This wine has a high density, opulent red-blue hue, with alluring aromas of spice, earth, and a touch of floral potpourri. About 30% whole clusters were included, and as a result, the spice notes extend to the rich and creamy palate, where pronounced, yet elegantly integrated, tannins underscore the fruit and add complexity to this age-worthy wine.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 25% were new and 38% once filled. This enhanced the deep color and broadened the palate of this lovely wine. It was bottled on August 9th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10 to 30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The block we source fruit from is block 2.11 and features Clone 667, which was harvested on September 20th, 2022.

Vineyard

To make this wine, our love of exploration took us to another acclaimed coastal Northern California wine region, Mendocino County’s renowned Anderson Valley. Located just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, in the cool “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley, Day Ranch is planted on an alluvial terrace that abuts a mountainside. This wild, rustic terroir yields a complex and distinctive expression of Pinot Noir.

With its deep ruby red hue and aromas of rhubarb, mint, cinnamon, and toasty French oak, this captivating wine beckons a first sip. Flavors of lush red fruit glide across the palate to a bold yet supple berries and cream finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. The wine was aged for 10 months in 35% new, and 42% one-year-old French oak barrels, with bottling on July 31, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. The grapes from Klopp Ranch were harvested by hand in the cool evening hours of August 25, 2022.

Vineyard

The father-daughter team of Ted and Lauren Klopp have been farming in the Russian River Valley for over two decades. Their home ranch is on Laguna Road, where the vines are tucked away in the nook of a foggy valley. We selected grapes from three different blocks on their ranch planted to three different clones: 115, 777, and Swan. The ground here is fertile Goldridge soils, where the vines produce small, intensely flavorful clusters of grapes.
