Tasting Notes

This wine displays an opulent, dense purple-red color and classic Russian River Valley aromas of blackberry, bramble, raspberry, and boysenberry that meld with notes of toasty oak and cocoa. On the palate, a burst of juicy black cherry and baking spice flavors make this wine vibrant and exciting, with soft, velvety tannins underscoring the dramatic fruit as it builds to a long, luscious finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly built heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed offskins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 33% of which were new, with 33% being once filled. We bottled on August 1st, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. We hand-harvest the grapes in the cool evening hours of September 5th, 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from Manzana Vineyard, which is farmed by the renowned Dutton Family. The Dutton’s have been growing grapes in Sonoma County—specifically the Russian River Valley—for generations. Because they are known for their meticulous farming and consistent quality vintage after vintage, their fruit is highly prized. Manzana is located in Green Valley, a sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley known for its cool temperatures. For Pinot Noir, this unique climate results in deeper colors and intense aromatics. The best barrels from Manzana Vineyard were used to make this wine, with each specifically selected for its unique and ideal traits.

  • “Youthful ruby in hue, the 2022 Pinot Noir Nightwing Vineyard is spicy with aromas of preserved spiced cranberries, pine, forest herbs, and dried roses. Medium-bodied, refreshing, and approachable, it offers even, ripe acidity, fine tannins, and a clean, mouthwatering finish. The Calera Clone produces extremely small berries. This increases the berry-to-stem ratio, yielding a wine with a dense, dark color and subtle stem-like qualities without the use of whole clusters. The wine reveals beautiful layers of high-toned red berries and blueberry syrup that are underscored by floral and herbal notes. Both elegant and extremely complex, it is reminiscent of walking the vineyard and tasting the grapes off the vine. With a heady perfumed finish and just a touch of drying oak tannin it makes a memorable statement on the palate.

  • “Interesting to take a clone developed at a specific location and plant it in a different spot. Oh, wait – that’s exactly what pretty much all California Pinot Noir is made from – clones brought from Burgundy and planted here. Even Calera, considered to be California heritage clone, came from Burgundy via Calera Winery owner Josh Jensen. So goes provenance in Pinot Noir, and whatever mutations have occurred over its travels from Burgundy to the Petaluma Gap, they are certainly working here, delivering rich red and black cherry fruit, cranberry, damp earth notes and a dash of cardamom for brightness. It is long and impeccably balanced throughout, with an inviting aspect to the finish. Well done!”

  • 94 Points: Clive Pursehouse Decanter - March 2025
  • “The vineyard sits at 1,200 ft, with this single clone bottling coming from Block 22; this Pinot Noir is big on fruit, with rays of red and blueberry fruits shooting across the aromatics profile with an edge of mint leaf. The palate sets a saline edge with tart raspberries and salted blood orange long and lean on this bright, nearly radiant Pinot Noir.”

It’s lean and not too mean, with a bright texture and a long finish that shows a wine working toward integration. From its rich purple-sapphire color to its beautiful high-tone perfume and black cherry aromas this is a wonderfully inviting wine. On the palate, lavish flavors of raspberry, blackberry pie, and sweet baking spices meld with toasty oak to create a luxurious and complex Pinot Noir with a long, creamy finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton Macro bins. It was then hand-sorted and gently destemmed into our 1-ton Super T fermenters. The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept cool. The skins were punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction, with minimal harsh tannins. The wines were pressed off skins after a minimum 14-day fermentation and then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels from a variety of cooperages, with 31% of the barrels being new. The final blend was assembled just prior to bottling, which occurred on August 2nd, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields of 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Working with these two different vineyards in two different neighborhoods provides layers of aromas and flavors unique to each region. This wine exudes floral perfume and spice notes from Laguna Ridge and red and black fruit and earthiness from Middle Reach. Grapes for our 2022 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir were harvested on September 1st and 6th, 2022.

Vineyard

This wine displays the complex, concentrated, and fruit-driven style of Pinot Noir that exemplifies the Russian River Valley. Russian River Valley has been further defined by its six unique “neighborhoods,” which from west to east include Sebastopol Hills, Green Valley, Middle Reach, Laguna Ridge, Santa Rosa Plains, and Eastern Hills. To craft this wine, we worked with River Road Ranch in Laguna Ridge and our Estate property, Thale’s Vineyard in Middle Reach.

The name Soberanes (Sew-bear-on-es) has long historical roots in Monterey County. Josi Maria Soberanes came to California during the Portola Expedition; the first recorded overland exploration of present-day California by the Spanish. The 8,900 acres of land is still in the hands of a direct descendant. The Pisoni and Franscioni families planted the vineyard in 2008 and are the caring stewards of the land. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The grapes for this wine came from two prized blocks: Arrow Block and Saddle Block. Both were planted to Clone 667, in 2000 and 1998 respectively, and both were harvested on August 23rd, 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. On Wildcat Mountain, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site—cool and challenging—and produces wines of great distinction.

Tasting Notes

The color is an opulent and dense purple red color. Aromas of rich leather, forest floor and sweet chocolate greet you. The palate is rich and bold. Strong tannin meets flavors of chocolate-covered blueberries. The finish is still young, lengthy full tannins that linger.

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermentors, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pumpovers and punchdowns. After 12 months of ageing in exclusively French oak barrels, 25% of which were new, we bottled in August of 2015.

Vintage

2014 had ideal temperatures and growing conditions. The fruit came in the door healthy, ripe and luscious. The fruit was hand harvested in the cool evening hours on September 24, 2014.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from a vineyard farmed by the renowned Dutton Family. The Dutton family has been growing grapes in Sonoma County — specifically the Russian River Valley — for generations. Their fruit is highly prized, as their meticulous farming has shown consistency and quality over the years. Manzana vineyard is located in Green Valley of Russian River Valley, a sub-appellation known for its even colder temperatures which gives wines deeper color and intense aromatics. The best barrels from this vineyard were used to assemble this wine. Each was specifically selected for showing ideal and unique traits for this wine.

Winemaking

The majority of the grapes were destemmed into small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of the fruit was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 30% new French oak was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine and to add mid-palate richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on May 24th-26th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage to vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Grapes for this wine were harvested by hand between August 31st and September 12th of 2022.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from a handful of top vineyards throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, with a focus on some of the finest sub-appellations within the region. The blend includes grapes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Other vineyards located in the Russian River Valley include River Road Ranch, the Dutton family’s Winkler and Calesa vineyards, and the Sangiacomo’s Tallgrass and Huichica vineyards in Carneros. We were also excited to include fruit from our new Nightwing Estate Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap AVA.
