  • “This softly extracted Pinot sourced exclusively from the Swan clone delivers a floral nose with aromas of raspberries, tart strawberries, lilacs and roses. The palate is soft and acid driven, with waves of dusty Bing cherries, cola spice, sandalwood and sage across the finish.”

  • 94 Points: Rich Cook Wine Review Online - March 2025
  • “This so-called ‘heritage’ California clone has found a fine home in Petaluma Gap, with bright red fruit, pepper, toasty oak and brown spice. It’s lean and not too mean, with a bright texture and a long finish that shows a wine working toward integration. As with all things MacRostie, fear not – it will happen, and it will happen with style.”

  • 93 Points: Clive Pursehouse Decanter - March 2025
  • “The Swan clone for this single clone bottling comes from Block 16 of the Nightwing Vineyard, at 1,200ft of elevation in Sonoma's Petaluma Gap AVA. Red fruited intensity on the aromas as tart red berries and salty ocean air pop against a backdrop of rose petals and dried mint. The palate is saline to its core. Bright and grippy wild blue fruits are highlighted with a dusty minerality and dried herb finish.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into one small open-top fermenter using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly built heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture these compounds the fermentations were kept at cool temperatures. Wines were pressed off skins after a minimum fermentation of 14 days before being aged for 10 months in 100% one-year-old French oak barrels. The wine was bottled on August 9th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Planted to respect the land’s natural topography and diverse soil types, Nightwing includes 24 blocks of Pinot Noir featuring 19 clones and six different rootstocks, with some blocks as small as 0.2 acres. To spotlight the profound differences between different block and clonal combinations, beginning in 2022 we created our Single Block, Single Clone Nightwing Pinot Noirs. This wine came exclusively from our 0.6-acre Block 16 Swan Clone planting, which yielded 1.85 tons per acre in 2022. It was harvested by hand at night on August 19th, at 26° Brix.

Vineyard

Nightwing Vineyard was planted in 2018 and is named after the indigenous nocturnal birds that keep a watchful eye on the land. The name is also a nod to the original guardian of the property, Vernon Morelli, a former WWII pilot who built a landing strip amid the vineyard. Located in the acclaimed Petaluma Gap AVA, Nightwing Vineyard is perched at 1,200 feet above sea level, where it basks in cool ocean winds and long, sunny days.

Tasting Notes

From its rich purple-sapphire color to its beautiful high-tone perfume and black cherry aromas this is a wonderfully inviting wine. On the palate, lavish flavors of raspberry, blackberry pie, and sweet baking spices meld with toasty oak to create a luxurious and complex Pinot Noir with a long, creamy finish.

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton Macro bins. It was then hand-sorted and gently destemmed into our 1-ton Super T fermenters. The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of the must. A three-day cold soak with daily pump-overs allowed us to extract color and tannin prior to fermentation. We then inoculated with select yeast strains that slowly build heat to produce aromatic compounds. In order to capture those compounds the fermentations were kept cool. The skins were punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction, with minimal harsh tannins. The wines were pressed off skins after a minimum 14-day fermentation and then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels from a variety of cooperages, with 31% of the barrels being new. The final blend was assembled just prior to bottling, which occurred on August 2nd, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields of 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. Working with these two different vineyards in two different neighborhoods provides layers of aromas and flavors unique to each region. This wine exudes floral perfume and spice notes from Laguna Ridge and red and black fruit and earthiness from Middle Reach. Grapes for our 2022 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir were harvested on September 1st and 6th, 2022.

Vineyard

This wine displays the complex, concentrated, and fruit-driven style of Pinot Noir that exemplifies the Russian River Valley. Russian River Valley has been further defined by its six unique “neighborhoods,” which from west to east include Sebastopol Hills, Green Valley, Middle Reach, Laguna Ridge, Santa Rosa Plains, and Eastern Hills. To craft this wine, we worked with River Road Ranch in Laguna Ridge and our Estate property, Thale’s Vineyard in Middle Reach.

From its opulent reddish-blue color to its mesmerizing aromas of black cherry, chocolate cupcake, toffee, and elegant French oak, this is a rich and complex wine. On the palate, red and dark fruit flavors dance on the tongue and are joined by notions of sweet saddle leather and dried cherry, with firm, fine-grained tannins promising a long life ahead.

Winemaking

Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were gently managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in a reduction in yields from 10-30%. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track, or ahead of normal growth. We harvested our Soberanes Vineyard grapes on September 13, 2022.

Vineyard

The name Soberanes (Sew-bear-on-es) has long historical roots in Monterey County. Josi Maria Soberanes came to California during the Portola Expedition; the first recorded overland exploration of present-day California by the Spanish. The 8,900 acres of land is still in the hands of a direct descendant. The Pisoni and Franscioni families planted the vineyard in 2008 and are the caring stewards of the land. The Soberanes Vineyard is tightly spaced and is located in the heart of the esteemed Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. The land is an eastward-facing alluvial terrace with gentle slopes to the valley floor.

Winemaking

The majority of the grapes were destemmed into small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of the fruit was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 30% new French oak was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine and to add mid-palate richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on May 24th-26th, 2023.

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay always delivers something special and unique, and this vintage is no exception. Both intricate and exotic, this wine begins with alluring fruit aromas of Meyer lemon and fresh pineapple. On the palate, a round, rich mouthfeel accentuates Wildcat’s signature high-tone notes of honey and spice. At the same time, thanks to Wildcat’s windy growing conditions, which thicken the grape skins, it has engaging structure and body.

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 20% of the oak being new. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. Once malolactic conversion was complete, the wine was left to age. The very best barrels from each lot were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on August 16th, 2018.

Vintage

The 2017 growing season started off as a wet one. Record rainfall through April invigorated the vines and bolstered canopies. Moderate-to-warm temperatures followed, allowing the vines to bloom and mature fruit in a balanced and tempered way. We did apply more leafing in our canopy management to counter the invigorating effects of the rain. All of our Chardonnay blocks were picked prior to the devastating wine country fires in early October, leaving all wine lots free of possible smoke influence. Grapes were picked from three distinct blocks planted to three different clones: 95, 76, and 15. Each block had a unique harvest date between September 14th and 16th, 2017.

Vineyard

Planted by Steve MacRostie in 1998, and located in the cool Petaluma Gap region of the Sonoma Coast, Wildcat Mountain Vineyard possesses an ideal mountain terroir and remarkable volcanic soils that consistently produce fruit with intensity and depth of flavor. Very close to the bay, yet 700 feet above sea level, this vineyard is windy, foggy, cool, and very stingy with its crop levels, which results in exceptional wines. This sustainably-certified vineyard is broken up into 18 different blocks spread across five fields, with a variety of elevations, exposures and soil types. Wildcat’s Chardonnay offers exceptional structure, sophisticated minerality and cool-climate “nerve,” while the Pinot Noir delivers sumptuous color, weight and black fruit character.

“I really love great Chardonnay, and I’m always surprised at the small percentage of it that rises to this level considering how much of it is out there. Thankfully, I run across wines like this one periodically, wines that demand attention and fly way above the mediocre ocean of its siblings. Gorgeous citrus, tart apple, pear and gentle oak spice ride bold acidity through a blossoming finish that says pay no mind to them – come with me. Brava!”

Tasting Notes

From its pale yellow straw color with light green reflections to its enticing lemon blossom and honeysuckle aromas, this is a beautiful and inviting wine. The perfumed floral elements continue on the palate, where a silky richness underscores bright citrus flavors. A harmonious blend of acidity and tannin carries everything to a fresh, focused finish with lingering notes of zesty lime.

  • “This is creamy and lush in vanilla, marshmallow and a healthy helping of toasted oak, yet it evolves in the glass to show undeniable acidity and mineral-laden aspects of dried herb and crushed rock. The finish emphasizes its light-bodied approach.”

Winemaking

The harvested grapes went directly to press as whole clusters in order to maximize quality and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouthfeel and texture. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation.  The wine spent its entire life in barrel where it completed primary and secondary malolactic fermentations and was aged on the lees for 15 months. In order to increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. With a longer time in barrel than many of our Chardonnays, we used a modest 15% new French oak in order to keep the oak and fruit in balance. This Chardonnay was bottled on February 14th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2015 vintage had very low yields, which led to many vineyards ripening earlier than normal. This was the case at Kent Ritchie, where the vintage’s low yields and the naturally small berry size of the Wente Selection Chardonnay resulted in one of our earliest picks, with harvest occurring on August 21st, 2015.

Vineyard

This prized site in the Russian River Valley has been farmed for more than 40 years by renowned winegrower Kent Ritchie. The vineyard is planted to Wente Selection Chardonnay. Situated on gently rolling hills, the soil is sandy loam with striations of sandstone. The famous clockwork fog of the Russian River Valley keeps this vineyard cool and provides ideal conditions for growing a classic expression of Chardonnay.

About this Wine

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came exclusively from our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. There, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons.

1.5L Magnum

93 Points

“The 2016 Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir is pale ruby-purple in color and scented of freshly crushed raspberries, wild strawberries and cranberries with hints of violets, fertile loam, underbrush and truffles. Medium-bodied with wonderful elegance and a beautiful quiet intensity, it has a solid frame of finely grained tannins and great freshness, finishing long.”

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir has a purple hue with matching plum aromas. Ripe raspberry, along with hints of cedar and spice give this wine a lifted and luxurious aromatic presence. On the palate, the entry is soft and the rich, with a mouth-filling texture that enhances impressions of mulling spice and tobacco. Gentle tannins add to the long, flowing finish of this very complex Pinot.

  • “Meaty black-cherry flavors integrate with this wine’s smoky oak, the round, supple fruit winning out in the end. There’s an umami, ramen-broth character to the tannins, adding to the wine’s clean richness and nourishing feel. Steve MacRostie planted this vineyard in 1998, in the fog and wind of the Petaluma Gap.”

  • 90 Points: Virginie Boone Wine Enthusiast - February 2019
  • “This is a soft, delicate and lightly styled red from the appellation, earthy and quietly rich in caramelized oak and baked cherry. It has a nice balance of nutmeg and cola on the finish.”

Winemaking

The fruit was gently destemmed into small open-top fermenters, using state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to avoid any pumping of must. Inoculation with select yeast strains followed a three-day cold soak, and the caps were managed with a combination of pump-overs and punch-downs. Blending fruit from different areas of the vineyard and different clones gives this wine depth and complexity. The Pinot Noir from Arrow Block provides the lush tannin and adds lively fruit aromatics. Saddle Block is an area of the vineyard that is very exposed to the wind, which contributes dense color and a long finish. After 10 months of aging in French oak barrels, 30% new oak, and 32% one-year-old, we bottled the wine on August 17th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 vintage started out with an early bud break followed by a warm growing season. Just when we were about to start picking we had a cool spell in late August. This helped slow things down and spread out the harvest. The grapes for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir came from a few different blocks of Wildcat Mountain. Clone 667 from the Arrow and Saddle blocks made up the majority of the blend, with a small amount being Pommard Clone 5. All of these grapes were hand harvested in the cool early mornings on different days from September 9th through September 22nd, 2016.
