  • “Creamy red fruit is complemented in a light, buzzy earthiness of tree bark, dried herb and mineral in this textured midweight wine. The appellation is well represented, the wine quietly rich in dark cherry, pomegranate and cola.”

Winemaking

The fruit was picked as whole clusters and brought to the winery in half-ton Macro Bins. It was then hand-sorted and gently destemmed into our 1-ton Super T fermenters. The skins of the fruit were punched down twice a day during fermentation to achieve maximum color and flavor extraction, with minimal harsh tannins from the seeds. When primary fermentation was complete, the wine was pressed from the skins into French oak barrels from a variety of different cooperages, 33% of which were new, and 22% one-year-old. The final blend was assembled just prior to bottling, which occurred August 16, 2018.

Vintage

The 2017 vintage followed a cool wet winter. The soils were wet and rich which required extra meticulous care with cover crop management and canopy management. There was a heat spike at the end of August that prompted an early pick of Thale’s Vineyard, a warmer site than Wohler and Manzana, which, being cooler sites, were able to hang longer. The fruit was hand-harvested on separate days for each vineyard: Thale’s September 2, Manzana September 10 and Wohler October 2, 2017. The three distinct harvest dates reflect the individual nature of each site and what each lends to the complexity of this wine.

Vineyard

This wine displays the complex, concentrated and fruit-driven style of Pinot Noir that exemplifies the Russian River Valley. To craft this wine, we work with a handful of top vineyards including our own Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the Middle Reach of Russian River Valley. The blend also includes fruit from the Dutton family’s Manzana property, which is in the cool Green Valley region, and grapes from Wohler Ranch along River Road.

Winemaking

To preserve the bright, delicate character of the fruit, all of the grapes went direct to press as whole clusters and were then gently pressed. After settling, 77% of the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation, 14% of which were new, with 15% once-used barrels. To provide freshness and focus to the blend, 23% of the wine stayed in stainless steel tanks for a cool fermentation and never went to barrel. The lots were aged on the lees for six months, with occasional lees stirring to increase richness and body. To achieve balance, a rich mouthfeel, and crisp acidity, only a partial secondary fermentation was completed. The blend was assembled in May of 2022, just prior to bottling, which occurred on May 23, 2022

Vintage

The 2021 vintage produced amazing wines. Yields were down slightly, and ripening occurred in a shorter period of time than in most years. The vines had slightly stunted growth perhaps from the drought the year before. Though things were picked earlier than usual, the weather was mild around harvest, allowing the acids to be crisp and the berries to be ripe. All of the grapes were hand-harvested between August 30 and September 27, 2021.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came from several exceptional Sonoma Coast vineyards, including the Sangiacomo and Ricci vineyards in Carneros, and sites farmed by the renowned Dutton and Martinelli families in the Russian River Valley. Selected for their cool climates and unique growing conditions, these vineyards lend distinct and complex characteristics to our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay.

Winemaking

The majority of the grapes were destemmed into small-lot fermenters to capture the uniqueness of each site. About 15% of the fruit was fermented with whole clusters to add fruit aromas and rich complexity to the final wine. Following a two-week fermentation on the skins, the wine was drained and put into French oak barrels for ten months of aging. While 30% new French oak was used to accentuate the structure and color of the wine and to add mid-palate richness, we took care with the new oak and toast levels to not overwhelm the delicate aromas of this fine coastal Pinot Noir. Bottling took place on June 2, 2022.

Vintage

The 2021 vintage delivered a moderate and consistent growing season for most of Sonoma County, leading to a smooth, easily manageable harvest. While the continuation of drought conditions led to slightly reduced yields, the overall quality and concentration of the grapes was exceptional. Grapes for this wine were harvested by hand between September 3 and September 17, 2021.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Pinot Noir came from a handful of top vineyards throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, with a focus on some of the finest sub-appellations. The blend includes grapes from our Thale’s Estate Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Other vineyards located in the Russian River Valley include River Road Ranch, and the Dutton family’s Winkler Vineyard and Crinella. We were also excited to include fruit from our new Nightwing Estate Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap AVA, along with fruit from the nearby Gap’s Crown Vineyard. To showcase the full picture of Sonoma Coast winegrowing, it also includes grapes from Walala Vineyard in the newly designated West Sonoma Coast AVA.

Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay always delivers something special and unique, and this vintage is no exception. Both intricate and exotic, this wine begins with alluring aromas of Asian pear and fragrant orange blossom. On the palate, a round, rich mouthfeel accentuates Wildcat’s signature high-tone notes of honey and spice. At the same time, thanks to Wildcat’s windy growing conditions, which thicken the grape skins, it has beautiful structure and body.

  • "Earthy and slightly sulfurous in big oak, this full-bodied wine manages to grasp handfuls of bright acidity that persists through a wall of powerfully ripe tropical flavor. Aromas and aspects of citrus and white flowers contribute additional freshness. "

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. The resulting juice was cold settled, racked off of its press lees, and moved directly to barrel for a cool fermentation. It was then aged in these same French oak barrels for 10 months, with 20% of the oak being new. The fermentation lees were stirred several times throughout the aging process. Once malolactic conversion was complete, the wine was left to age. The very best barrels from each lot were then selected for our Wildcat Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay. The wine was bottled on August 5, 2016.

Vintage

The 2015 vintage started with an early budbreak that accelerated the pace of the vintage. We had heat accumulation that added up quickly, which led to an earlier harvest compared to most vintages. Grapes were picked from four distinct blocks planted to four different clones: 95, 76, 4 and 15. Each block had a unique harvest picking date between September 8 and 19.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, owned by Steve MacRostie and his partners Nancy and Tony Lilly. At Wildcat, the vines dig into the sparse volcanic soil and stand firm against the strong winds that race in off of the Pacific Ocean most afternoons. This fog-shrouded mountaintop vineyard is a classic Sonoma Coast site. Cool and challenging, it yields wines of great distinction.

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, all grapes went direct to press as whole clusters. After pressing and settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. Once dry and finished with malolactic fermentation, the lots were aged in barrel for 10 months on the lees, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. This wine was aged in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, and 40% one-year-old, to offer some subtle oak influence. The wine was then bottled on August 16th, 2017.

Vintage

The vineyard’s 40-year-old vines were planted using wide spacing during an era when larger tractors dictated that plenty of room be provided to perform the farming work. The large, sprawling Clone 4 Chardonnay vines are trained using quadrilateral trellising on AXR rootstock. Sandy Goldridge soils provide the vines fertile ground for strong growth. 2016 had early an bud break, but cool temperatures in August slowed down the harvest leading to beautifully developed flavors and long hangtime. Harvested by hand, this fruit arrived at the winery healthy and ripe on September 30th, 2016.

Charles Heintz has been growing premium Chardonnay grapes for decades. His namesake vineyard is located in the westernmost part of the Russian River Valley and is therefore our coolest climate site. Charlie himself has said, “It’s like growing Chardonnay in a rain cloud out here.”

To further increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. Deemed aged to perfection, it was bottled on February 14, 2018.

Vintage

We are now in our third year of crafting master blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We named these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer deciphering codes in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our rich history on the Sonoma Coast, The Loch and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage — stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Key embodies everything that we know about making great Chardonnay.

Vineyard

Here at MacRostie, we pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. Among its key vineyards, this blend combines the beautiful lush, fruit-forward character of Mirabelle Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, the lemon citrus flavors from the acclaimed Bacigalupi Vineyard, the minerality of Kent Ritchie Vineyard, and the honey, ginger and mineral notes from Steve MacRostie’s own Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. Prized pieces of Dutton Ranch and Sangiacomo’s Roberts Road Vineyard merry harmoniously into The Key.

The wine spent its entire life in barrel where it completed primary and secondary malolactic fermentations and was aged on the lees for 11 months. In order to increase richness and body, it was occasionally stirred. The Kent Ritchie Chardonnay has a delicate nature so a modest 18% new French oak was used in order to keep the oak and fruit in balance. This Chardonnay was bottled on August 15th, 2017.

Vintage

The 2016 growing season was a stellar vintage. Concentrated flavors developed early in the year at a low harvest Brix. We harvested early on August 22nd, 2016. This captured the crisp fruit and mineral qualities this unique site offers.
