  • “Fragrant and honeyed, this wine is balanced by acidity, providing a good back and forth between ripe peaches and crisp lemons. Vanilla, toast and ginger notes reveal as you sip, showing the nice shaping influence of new oak in the aging process of this wine.”

Winemaking

The grapes went directly to press as whole clusters where they were gently pressed to provide a distinct mouthfeel and texture. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. This wine spent its entire life in barrel where it completed secondary malolactic fermentation. After 10 months of aging in 20% new French oak, the wine was blended and put into 42% new and 33% once-filled oak. To further increase richness and body, the lees were occasionally stirred. Deemed aged to perfection, it was bottled on March 16, 2022.

Vintage

We pride ourselves on working with growers who know the land intimately. Vintage after vintage, the partnerships we have with our growers provide us with beautiful fruit. Among its key vineyards, this blend combines fruit from four of our most prized sources; Olivet Lane, the Martinelli family’s Woolsey Road, Mirabelle Vineyard, and Day Ranch in Anderson Valley. Each component is carefully selected by our winemaking team to create the harmonious symphony that is “The Key.”

Vineyard

We are now in our seventh year of crafting master blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We named these wines The Loch and The Key, both as a nod to our founder Steve MacRostie’s Scottish heritage and to his early experiences as a cryptographer in Europe for the U.S. Army. Combining decades of winemaking mastery with our rich history, The Loch and The Key are consummate blends, artfully crafted from our best blocks and barrels of wine. “Our goal is simple, but not easy,” says Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen. “We search our cellar for our most beautiful wines of the vintage—stirring wines that sing on the palate. Then we begin blending.” Like a secret code unlocked by our winemakers, The Key embodies everything that we know about making great Chardonnay.

Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, the harvested grapes went directly to press as whole clusters and were gently pressed. This provides a distinct mouthfeel texture. After settling, the Kiser Ranch juice, which represents 80% of the blend, was racked to a stainless steel tank for a cool, tank fermentation—an approach that puts the emphasis on fruit aromas. To provide richness and aromatic complexity to the final wine, the remaining juice was racked to French oak barrels for fermentation

Vintage

The 2015 vintage started with an early bud break that accelerated the vintage. We had heat accumulation that added up quickly, which led to an earlier pick compared to most vintages. All three of the ranches were picked before September 20th, 2015. Despite the early picking date, the fruit maintained high acid levels, which is true to our traditional style for this wine.

Vineyard

The grapes for this Chardonnay came exclusively from three different blocks of the famed Sangiacomo Vineyard, with the majority of the fruit coming from the Kiser Ranch and Rich Kiser Ranches. A small portion came from Roberts Road, which is more exposed to the winds from the Petaluma Gap. For three generations, the Sangiacomo family has been growing grapes in and around the town of Sonoma. Recognized as master winegrowers, their fruit is highly prized for its consistent quality and delicious flavor profiles.

The first impression of the aromas is one of exotic complexity, with classic citrus layers and tropical notes of Brazilian Feijoa fruit and honey. Winemaking

In order to maximize quality, all grapes went direct to press as whole clusters. After pressing and settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. Once dry and finished with malo-lactic fermentation, the lots were aged in barrel for 10monthson the lees, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. On order to offer some subtle oak influence, this wine was aged in French oak barrels, 86% of which were one-year-old, with no new oak used. The wine was then bottled on August 13th, 2018.

Vintage

The 2017 growing season started off as a wet one. Record rainfall through April invigorated the vines and bolstered canopies. Moderate-to-warm temperatures followed, allowing the vines to bloom and mature fruit in a balanced and tempered way. We did apply more leafing in our canopy management to counter the invigorating effects of the rain. All of our Chardonnay blocks were picked prior to the devastating wine country fires in early October, leaving all wine lots free of possible smoke influence. Grapes were picked on September 26th, 2017.

All grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. By pressing gently as whole clusters, we were able to preserve the bright, delicate characteristics that we prize. After settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation to give the wine just a hint of toast and spice. We used 20% new oak to give the wine a rich palate while allowing the fruit to shine through. Once the primary fermentation was complete, the wine went through a secondary malo-lactic fermentation. The barrel-fermented wine was aged on the lees for nine months, with occasional lees stirring to increase richness and body. The final blend was assembled just prior to bottling, which occurred on August 13th, 2018.

Because the 2018 growing season was one of naturally high yields, we worked closely with our grower partners to thin the fruit and to bring each vineyard into ideal balance. In order to maximize quality, all grapes went directly to press as whole clusters. After pressing and settling, the juice was racked into French oak barrels for fermentation. This wine completed malolactic fermentation and was aged in barrel for 10 months on the lees, with occasional stirring to increase richness and body. It was aged exclusively in French oak barrels, 17% of which were new, and 26% one-year-old, prior to bottling on August 16, 2023.

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track or ahead of normal growth. While the site’s somewhat inland location ensures warm, sun-filled days, temperatures cool dramatically at night yielding a beautiful expression of Chardonnay with alluring aromas, vibrant acidity and complex flavors.

“Sunshine in a glass. The nose of this immaculately balanced Chardonnay incorporates aromas of crème brûlée, honeysuckle and pineapple. The palate is equally bright, with a tropical personality showing zesty citrus and ripe pear flavors. A textural finish brings loads of spice and zippy acid.”

Winemaking

The harvested grapes were put directly as whole clusters into our tank press. A gentle press cycle was used to keep excess tannins and bitterness out of the juice. The juice was cold-settled for 48 hours and racked to barrel for fermentation and aging. The wine was aged in 31% new, and 15% one-year old French oak barrels. The wine was bottled on August 16th, 2023.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was impacted by a third consecutive year of drought that resulted in up to a 10-30% reduction in yields. The growing season was temperate, which in grape growing means we were on track or ahead of normal growth. Then we saw some heat spikes that prompted our first picks. 2022 was a year for vintage-to-vintage variation and differentiation between vineyards. The vineyard is cordon pruned and planted to Clone 95 Chardonnay. This clone produces small clusters and small berries, which contribute to this wine’s pure, concentrated flavors and aromas. To ensure that the fruit was delivered to the winery cool and in pristine condition, the grapes were harvested by hand on the night of September 6th, 2022.

Vineyard

Mirabelle is a beautiful vineyard located along Wohler Road in the heart of the Russian River Valley. It is planted on the valley floor where dense fog frequently settles, keeping the ripening progress slow and steady. The site’s fertile soils lead to healthy vines that produce classic Russian River Valley Chardonnay aromas and flavors.
